Joshua 13

In Joshua 13, Joshua has reached a point where he has accomplished much of what was required of Him.  Joshua 12 has a list of the kings that Israel defeated and wiped off the face of the earth.  Although, this is an impressive list, there is still much work to be done.  Just as Joshua had brought the Children of Israel to this point, Yeshua has done the same.  He went to the cross, rose the third day and placed His blood on the mercy seat in the heavenlies, Yeshua has won a great victory for us.  In each of these cases, there is still much work to be done.  Salvation was never meant to be the final step, it was just the beginning.  As with the Children of Israel, there are still many enemies to be defeated in our lives.  The question is, will the believer put forth the work of walking in resurrection life or will they live in bondage today?

Joshua 13:1

1 Now Joshua was aged advanced in days; and Yehovah said to him, You are aged advanced in days, and there remains yet very much land to be possessed.

  • Although Joshua had done much of the work, there was much more to do.
  • Remember what Yehovah had told them in Deuteronomy 7:16-26.

16 And you shall consume all the people which Yehovah your Redeemer shall deliver you; your eye shall have no pity upon them: neither shall you serve their gods; for that a snare to you. 17 If you shall say in your heart, These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them? 18 You shall not be afraid of them: shall well remember what Yehovah your Redeemer did to Pharaoh, and to all Egypt; 19 The great temptations which your eyes saw, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the stretched out arm, whereby Yehovah your Redeemer brought you out: so shall Yehovah your Redeemer do to all the people of whom you are afraid. 20 Moreover Yehovah your Redeemer will send the hornet among them, until they that are left, and hide themselves from you, be destroyed. 21 You shall not be frightened at them: for Yehovah your Redeemer is among you, a mighty God and terrible. 22 And Yehovah your Redeemer will put out those nations before you by little and little: you may not consume them at once, lest the beasts of the field increase upon you. 23 But Yehovah your Redeemer shall deliver them to you, and shall destroy them with a mighty destruction, until they be destroyed. 24 And He shall deliver their kings into your hand, and you shall destroy their name from under heaven: there shall no man be able to stand before you, until you have destroyed them. 25 The graven images of their redeemer shall you burn with fire: you shall not desire the silver or gold on them, nor take to you, lest you be snared therein: for it an abomination to Yehovah your Redeemer. 26 Neither shall you bring an abomination into your house, lest you be a cursed thing like it: you shall utterly detest it, and you shall utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.

  • It was never supposed to happen all at once. They were to take over the land at God’s pace.
  • This was to ensure that the beasts did not take over and the work would have to be repeated.
  • Joshua would do most of the work, but they have to finish it on Yehovah’s power staying in His word.
  • It is the same for us. Yeshua has defeated the enemy, but we are to defeat our personal enemies.  The only question is, will we move forward on His power or our own?
  • Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 15:10.

10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and His grace which upon me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

  • Grace comes from the Greek word χάρις charis (H5485).
  • It refers to the supernatural power of Yehovah that works within the life of the believer.
  • We are never to do it on our own, we are to learn how to access His power. Then we are to use this power to accomplish His tasks He sets before us.
  • We are to do this while walking precisely in His word.

Joshua 13:2-6

2 This is the land that yet remains: all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri, 3 From Sihor, which is before Egypt, even to the borders of Ekron northward, which is counted to the Canaanite: five lords of the Philistines; the Gazathites, and the Ashdothites, the Eshkalonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avites: 4 From the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that is beside the Sidonians, to Aphek, to the borders of the Amorites: 5 And the land of the Giblites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising, from Baal-gad under mount Hermon to the entering into Hamath. 6 All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only divide you it by lot to the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded you.

  • God was to drive these nations out before the children of Israel.
  • If not, they would become a snare to the Children of Israel.
  • Moses warned them and Joshua will warn them again in Joshua 23:11-16.

11 Take good heed therefore to yourselves, that you love Yehovah your Redeemer. 12 Else if you do in any wise go back, and cleave to the remnant of these nations, these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in to them, and they to you: 13 Know for a certainty that Yehovah your Redeemer will no more drive out these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps to you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good land which Yehovah your Redeemer has given you. 14 And, behold, this day I going the way of all the earth: and you know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing has failed of all the good things which Yehovah your Redeemer spoke concerning you; all are come to pass to you, not one thing has failed thereof. 15 Therefore it shall come to pass, as all good things are come upon you, which Yehovah your Redeemer promised you; so shall Yehovah bring upon you all evil things, until He has destroyed you from off this good land which Yehovah your Redeemer has given you. 16 When you have transgressed the covenant of Yehovah your Redeemer, which He commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then shall the anger of Yehovah be kindled against you, and you shall perish quickly from off the good land which He has given to you.

  • All they had to do is keep the covenant as we are to do today.
  • However, the time came to start dividing the land.

Joshua 13:7-8

7 Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes, and the half tribe of Manasseh, 8 With whom the Reubenites and the Gadites have received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of Yehovah gave them;

  • The land west of the Jordan River was to be divided among the remaining nine and one-half tribes.
  • The Reubenites, the Gadites and one-half of the tribe of Manasseh had received their inheritance east of the Jordan River, Numbers 32:29-33.

29 And Moses said to them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over Jordan, every man armed to battle, before Yehovah, and the land shall be subdued before you; then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession: 30 But if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan. 31 And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As Yehovah has said to your servants, so will we do. 32 We will pass over armed before Yehovah into the land of Canaan, that the possession of our inheritance on this side Jordan ours. 33 And Moses gave to them to the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, and to half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, the cities of the country round about.

  • The Reubenites, the Gadites and one-half of the tribe of Manasseh went over the Jordan and had done what they said they would.
  • They would be released in Joshua 22.

Joshua 13:9-13

9 From Aroer, that is upon the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain of Medeba to Dibon; 10 And all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, to the border of the children of Ammon; 11 And Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maachathites, and all mount Hermon, and all Bashan to Salcah; 12 All the kingdom of Og in Bashan, which reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei, who remained of the remnant of the giants: for these did Moses smite, and cast them out. 13 Nevertheless the children of Israel expelled not the Geshurites, nor the Maachathites: but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day.

  • These are the lands that were given to the Reubenites, the Gadites and one-half of the tribe of Manasseh.
  • These still had work to do in their own land.
  • However, they did not expel the Geshurites and the Maachathites.
  • David still fought with the Geshurites in 1 Samuel 27:8.

And David and his men went up, and invaded the Geshurites, and the Gezrites, and the Amalekites: for those of old the inhabitants of the land, as you go to Shur, even to the land of Egypt.

  • Just as Yehovah had warned the Children of Israel, these would become a snare.

Joshua 13:14

14 Only to the tribe of Levi he gave none inheritance; the sacrifices of Yehovah Judge of Israel made by fire their inheritance, as He said to them.

  • The Levites were not to get an inheritance.
  • They had proven who they stood by in Exodus 32:26-28.

26 Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on Yehovah’s side? And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him. 27 And he said to them, Thus says Yehovah Judge of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor. 28 And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.

  • The Levites stood with Yehovah that day in spite of the task before them.
  • As a result, they received a greater inheritance, Deuteronomy 18:1-2.

The priests the Levites, all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the burnt offerings of Yehovah His inheritance. Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren: Yehovah their inheritance, as He has said to them.

Joshua 13:15-23

15 And Moses gave to the tribe of the children of Reuben according to their families. 16 And their coast was from Aroer, that is on the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain by Medeba; 17 Heshbon, and all her cities that are in the plain; Dibon, and Bamoth-baal, and Beth-baal-meon, 18 And Jahazah, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath, 19 And Kirjathaim, and Sibmah, and Zareth-shahar in the mount of the valley, 20 And Beth-peor, and Ashdoth-pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth, 21 And all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses smote with the princes of Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, dukes of Sihon, dwelling in the country. 22 Balaam also the son of Beor, the soothsayer, did the children of Israel slay with the sword among them that were slain by them. 23 And the border of the children of Reuben was Jordan, and the border. This the inheritance of the children of Reuben after their families, the cities and the villages thereof.

  • Moses had given these lands to the tribe of Reuben.

Joshua 13:24-28

24 And Moses gave to the tribe of Gad, even to the children of Gad according to their families. 25 And their coast was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the children of Ammon, to Aroer that is before Rabbah; 26 And from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir; 27 And in the valley, Beth-aram, and Beth-nimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, Jordan and his border, even to the edge of the sea of Chinnereth on the other side Jordan eastward. 28 This is the inheritance of the children of Gad after their families, the cities, and their villages.

  • Moses had given these lands to the tribe of Gad.

Joshua 13:29-32

29 And Moses gave to the half tribe of Manasseh: and was of the half tribe of the children of Manasseh by their families. 30 And their coast was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, threescore cities: 31 And half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, to the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, to the one half of the children of Machir by their families. 32 These which Moses did distribute for inheritance in the plains of Moab, on the other side Jordan, by Jericho, eastward.

  • Moses had given these lands to the half tribe of Manasseh.

Joshua 13:33

33 But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave not inheritance: Yehovah Judge of Israel was their inheritance, as He said to them.

  • Again, it is repeated that the tribe of Levi did not receive an inheritance of land.
  • In the end, they were given a portion of the other tribes.
  • They would be spread through all the lands.
  • They were to be the teachers of the word.
  • For the believers, there is an inheritance for us.
  • The question for all of us, do we want the inheritance of the 11 tribes or that of the Levites?
  • And if we want that of the Levities, are we doing everything possible to secure that inheritance?
  • Are we doing everything possible to walk as He walked or are we still concerned with life on earth as we know it today?
  • Even First Century believers had to be reminded in 1 John 2:15-17.

15 Love not the world, neither the things in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passes away, and the lust thereof: but he that does the will of God abides for ever.

  • All that is in the world will pass away; however, many stake their lives in this world.
  • They are not building treasures in Heaven. Their inheritance may be less than what they have assumed.
  • As the dividing of the land continues it will list many of the nations that were not expelled. These will eventually become a snare.
  • The words of Yehovah that Moses spoke will come back ringing in the ears of the Children of Israel, Numbers 33:50-56.

50 And Yehovah spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan Jericho, saying, 51 Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, When you are passed over Jordan into the land of Canaan; 52 Then you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and destroy all their pictures, and destroy all their molten images, and quite pluck down all their high places: 53 And you shall dispossess the land, and dwell therein: for I have given you the land to possess it. 54 And you shall divide the land by lot for an inheritance among your families: to the more you shall give the more inheritance, and to the fewer you shall give the less inheritance: every man’s shall be in the place where his lot falls; according to the tribes of your fathers you shall inherit. 55 But if you will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which you let remain of them pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein you dwell. 56 Moreover it shall come to pass, I shall do to you, as I thought to do to them.

  • Such is the reason, that the Children of Israel were enslaved in future generations.
  • It was a lesson for those that followed and believers.
  • The question for us is, did we expel our enemies or are we still foolishly thinking God will do all the work?
  • There is a work for us to do and it is time to do it.
  • Many are in bondage today, because they have not learned this lesson.
  • We can be free, if we meticulously observe His word today.
