Devarim 18 (Deuteronomy 18)
Devarim 18, Moshe again tells the Children of Yisrael that the Priests and the Levites have no inheritance in the land. Their inheritance is Yehovah. They were chosen to minister before Yehovah. The people were to give the Levites and Priest what was due to them. When we come into the land we are not to learn the ways of the Nations. Moshe will discuss that Yehovah will raise up a prophet like Him. This is one of the most important prophesies for Yisrael and the Nations. We will all be required to listen to this Prophet. Finally, Moshe tells the people not to listen to false prophets.
Yehovah is used 19 times in Devarim 18.

Inheritance of the Levite
Inheritance of the Levite
Devarim 18:1
1 The Priests the Levites, all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Yisrael. They shall eat the offerings of Yehovah made by fire, and His inheritance.
The Priests and the Levities have no part in the inheritance with Yisrael. This was stated as far back as Bemidbar 18:20-21.
20 And Yehovah spoke to Aharon, You shall have no inheritance in their land, neither shall you have any part among them. I your part and your inheritance among the Children of Yisrael. 21 And, behold, I have given the Children of Levi all the tenth in Yisrael for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, the service of the Ohel of the Congregation.
It almost seems as if the Levites were given the best of deals. They would not receive an inheritance in Yisrael, but would receive a tenth of the increase. A deal like that today would net a tidy sum in many churches. One may not even have to work. However, that is not what happened, Bemidbar 18:23-24.
22 Neither must the Children of Yisrael henceforth come nigh the Ohel of the Congregation, lest they bear sin, and die. 23 But the Levites shall do the service of the Ohel of the Congregation, and they shall bear their iniquity. A statute for ever throughout your generations, that among the Children of Yisrael they have no inheritance. 24 But the tithes of the Children of Yisrael, which they offer a heave offering (terumah) to Yehovah, I have given to the Levites to inherit. Therefore I have said to them, Among the Children of Yisrael they shall have no inheritance.
Even if the Levites received all the tithe they were supposed to, most lived a moderate lifestyle. Most spent time away from home in service of Yehovah and the Ohel Moed or the Temple of Yehovah. They bore the sin of the Children of Yisrael.
Additionally, the Levites had little time to pursue anything other than service to Yehovah. There were restrictions placed on them that were not upon the common Yisraeli. At best, the Levites would achieve sufficiency and not much more beyond that. This may or may not be true today.
Classes of Believers
Classes of Believers
Devarim 18:2
2 Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren. Yehovah their inheritance, as He has said to them.
It is important to realize there were two classes of people based on bloodlines in Yisrael. Today, there is the same, but it is based on something different. There are three classes of believers related to this subject:
· Those who serve Yehovah.
· Those who receive from the service of others.
· Those who are transitioning into full servitude to Yehovah.
Today there is the question, do you want the inheritance of the common believer or the inheritance of those who serve Yehovah? If you choose the latter, what are you doing to ensure that is your inheritance? Because in the future, believers will be divide into at least two classes, one is in Revelation 7:9-10.
9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a Great Multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; 10 and cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sits upon the throne, and to the Lamb.
There is the Great Multitude. This is the vast majority of believers. They are described in Revelation 7:14-17.
14 And I said to him, Sir, you know. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His Temple. And He that sits on the throne shall dwell among them. 16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. 17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them to living fountains of waters and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.
Initially, it may seem as if these are the uppermost servants of Yehovah; however, there is more to come. This is the Great Multitude. These are before the throne of God. They are cared for by God. They receive from the living fountains of water and God wipes away all their tears. It almost sounds like the best. However, Yochanan tells us of another group in Revelation 19:7-8.
7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honor to Him. For the marriage of the Lamb is come, and His wife has made herself ready. 8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white. For the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.
This is the Bride of Messiah. The question that follows is, are these all believers or is this a subset of believers? There are many that declare that all believers will be in the Bride of Messiah. It sounds good; however, one does not have to look very far to discover that there may be a difference. Especially when it states in Revelation 19:4-6.
4 And the twenty-four elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia. 5 And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all you His servants, and you that fear Him, both small and great. 6 And I heard as it were the voice of a Great Multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia, for the Lord God omnipotent reigns.
If the Great Multitude is praising the Bride, then obviously they are in a different group than those in the Bride. Additionally, those in the Great Multitude “washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.” Whereas the Bride is “granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white.” The Bride is given a garment based on her works righteousness.
If one believes that they will be in the Bride and rule and reign with Messiah, then they must contend with 2 Timothy 2:11-12.
11 A faithful saying. For if we be dead with, we shall also live with. 12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with, if we deny, He also will deny us.
If we are to reign with Him, we must be willing to suffer with Him. We should have at least taken up our cross and walked like Him. That is a walk that few have done in the last 2000 years.
However, if you want to reign with Him, there is still time to suffer. Just ensure you suffer for His sake and not out of your own ignorance.
Priestly Inheritance
Priestly Inheritance
Devarim 18:3-4
3 And this shall be the priest’s due from the people, from them that offer a sacrifice, whether bull (shor) or sheep (seh); and they shall give to the priest the shoulder, and the two jawbones (lechiy), and the maw. 4 The firstfruit of your grain (dagan), of your wine, and of your oil, and the first of the fleece of your sheep, shall you give him.
Maw is the Hebrew word קֵבָה qevah (H6896). It is in the Bible 1 time. It refers to the stomach of the animal.
There is a similar word קֹבָה qovah (H6897). It is in the Bible 1 time. קֹבָה qovah (H6897) is used in Bemidbar 25:8.
8 And he (Pinechas) went after the man of Yisrael into the tent (qubbah), and thrust both of them through, the man of Yisrael, and the woman through her belly (qovah). So the plague was stayed from the Children of Yisrael.
Tent is the Hebrew word קֻבָּה qubbah (H6898). It is in the Bible 1 time.
All three words, קֵבָה qevah (H6896), קֹבָה qovah (H6897) and קֻבָּה qubbah (H6898) come from the Hebrew word קָבַב qavav (H6895).
קָבַב qavav (H6895) is in the Bible 8 times. It is translated curse 7 times and at all 1 time. It is found 7 times in Bemidbar 23 and 1 time in Bemidbar 24. It is used in the discussion between Balaq and Bilam.
The priests were given a portion of every bull and sheep sacrificed, the:
· Shoulder.
· Two jawbones.
· Stomach.
In addition, the Priests received the:
· Firstfruit of the grain.
· Firstfruit of the wine.
· Firstfruit of the oil.
· First fleece of the sheep.
Unlike the Levites, the Priest only received a portion of the tithe, Bemidbar 18:25-26.
25 And Yehovah spoke to Moshe, saying, 26 Thus speak to the Levites, and say to them, When you take of the Children of Yisrael the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then you shall offer up a heave offering (terumah) of it for Yehovah, a tenth of the tithe.
The Levites were to tithe a tenth of what they received. This would become a heave offering for the Priests.
If the Levites suffered because of a lack of tithe, the Priest would have little to live on. This could potentially limit administering the Ohel Moed or the Temple. This is a situation that could worsen if allowed to occur. It could potentially impact all of Yisrael. The Children of Yisrael needed to appreciate this.
Although many lack in giving, their lack actually results from not giving. This is a confusing point for many. If they do not tithe because of financial issues; they will continue to have financial issues until they realize it was never theirs to keep. We do not tithe to gain. We tithe because that is our faith.
Bemidbar 18:29-30
29 Out of all your gifts you shall offer every heave offering (terumah) of Yehovah, of all the best thereof, the hallowed part thereof out of it. 30 Therefore you shall say to them, When you have heaved the best thereof from it, then it shall be counted to the Levites as the increase of the threshingfloor, and as the increase of the winepress.
The best of the tithe was to go to the Priest. This was to become a heave offering.
Bemidbar 18:31-32
31 And you shall eat it in every place, you and your households. For it your reward for your service in the Ohel of the Congregation. 32 And you shall bear no sin by reason of it, when you have heaved from it the best of it. Neither shall you pollute the holy things of the Children of Yisrael, lest you die.
The tenth of the tenth was to be eaten where the priest decided. It was for him and his family. It was to sustain them so that they could serve in the Ohel Moed. They were the ones to stand between the plague of the sins and the Children of Yisrael. If not for them, there would be continuous plagues ravaging the land.
We need to appreciate the spiritual connection between those who serve and those who receive. There is a spiritual link that can prosper us or cause lack in our lives. As it was then, so it is today.
The priests who were closest to Yehovah received even less than the average Levite. The priest received of the sacrifice; however, that was not the entire animal.
Interestingly enough, the only animals referenced in Devarim 18 are the bull and sheep. These represent the spiritual believers of today, 1 Corinthians 2:12-13.
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Spirit teaches; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
And in 1 Corinthians 2:15-16.
15 But he that is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 16 For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Messiah.
This is as opposed to the carnal believers of 1 Corinthians 3:1-3.
1 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual, but as to carnal, as to babes in Messiah. 2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat. For hitherto you were not able, neither yet now are you able. 3 For you are yet carnal. For whereas among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are you not carnal, and walk as men?
The carnal believer is represented by goats and birds. These are not discussed in Devarim 18. Carnal believers can be somewhat stubborn and argumentative, but not always. There are also carnal believers that are quite docile and independent at times. These may be inquisitive, but never fully apply the lessons they learn. They can wander from a flock temporarily looking for other provisions and items of interest. They are more concerned with their individual opinions and life than the unity of the body and service to Yehovah and others. Carnal believers are sometimes like a bird, they will eat from whatever source is available. They have a tendency to come and go for the slightest reason. These usually do not hear God’s voice on a consistent basis if at all.
Too often carnal believers are confused with spiritual believers. There is a fine line between the best of carnal believers and the weakest of spiritual believers. Given time, it is easy to recognize the difference. It is difficult to build a spiritual congregation until one can recognize the differences.
Now the Priest receives of the bull and sheep, their shoulder, jaw bone and the stomach. These represent various things. The shoulder represents the burden of the believers the priest must bear. The jawbone represents the part that keeps the face together. This is necessary so that we can stand and face both Yehovah and the adversity that is before us. Finally, the stomach represents the curse of the carnal nature that must be tamed. Many of us are ruled by our bellies more often than our spirit.
The Priests also receive the firstfruit of grain, wine, oil and the first of the fleece. These are to enable the Priests’ ministry. They represent the word, moves of the Spirit and righteousness.
Levites are Chosen
Levites are Chosen
Devarim 18:5
5 For Yehovah your Redeemer has chosen him out of all your tribes, to stand to minister in the name of Yehovah, him and his sons for ever.
The Levites and Priests were not just chosen out of all the tribes because they were fair-haired sons of Yisrael. Because truthfully, they did not start out this way, Bereishis 49:5-7.
5 Shimon and Levi brethren; instruments of cruelty their habitations. 6 My soul, come not you into their secret; to their assembly, my honor, be not you united. For in their anger they slew a man, and in their self-will they dug down a bull (shor). 7 Cursed their anger, for fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel. I will divide them in Yaaqov, and scatter them in Yisrael.
Yaaqov prophesied of the division and scattering of Shimon and Levi throughout the land. This was a result of their actions against Shekhem in Bereishis 34:25-27.
25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Yaaqov, Shimon and Levi, Dinah’s brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males. 26 And they slew Chamor and Shekhem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shekhem’s house, and went out. 27 The sons of Yaaqov came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.
It is true that Shekhem had taken Dinah and committed fornication; however, Shimon and Levi took matters into their own hands. They had neither Yehovah’s nor Yaaqov’s blessing in this matter. As a result, they were to be divided and scattered in Yisrael.
Sometime later when Moshe returns from 40 days with Yehovah, he finds that the Children of Yisrael had created quite a mess with the golden calf. The Levities will take action to help cleanup the mess, Shemos 32:26-27.
26 Then Moshe stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who on Yehovah’s side? To me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him. 27 And he said to them, Thus says Yehovah Redeemer of Yisrael, Put every man his sword by his side, go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.
When Moshe asked who was on Yehovah’s side, the Levites gathered together with Moshe. This was almost a redemption of their name. Their father was involved in the incident in Shechem. Since then, the Levites had done little, if anything, to redeem their name, Shemos 32:28.
28 And the Children of Levi did according to the word of Moshe. And there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.
Either additional direction was given or somehow the Levites knew who to kill. Only 3,000 died that day. This seems to be a small number when compared to the overall number of Yisraeli. Possibly, it was only a small number that actually participated in the sin. Or these were the instigators or the worst of the sinners. The fact is, all were guilty in this sin. Although one may not have of participated, if they did not say something, they are just as guilty. When a sin of this magnitude occurs, anyone who sits idly by and says nothing is just as compliant as the ones who sinned.
Then in Shemos 32:29.
29 For Moshe had said, Consecrate yourselves to day to Yehovah, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.
The Levites were blessed this day and would eventually be set aside for even greater responsibilities. From this day forward, the Levites were joined to Yehovah.
Called and the Chosen
Called and the Chosen
As the Levites were chosen, there are those that will be chosen in the future. Yeshua tells us in Matityahu 22:14.
14 For many are called (kletos), but few are chosen (eklektos).
In the last two thousand years many have been called, but only a few will be chosen in the future. This may come as a surprise if one is still living under the foregone conclusion that all believers will be in the Bride of Messiah. That may be what many teach to water-down the faith and make it palatable for the masses; however, that is not what the Bible declares.
The question is, who are the called in the parable of the Marriage Supper?
Called is the Greek word κλητός kletos (G2822). It is the Bible 11 times. κλητός kletos (G2822) is always translated called. κλητός kletos (G2822) is used as an adjective. It is not a verb, this makes a big difference.
Romans 1:1
1 Paul, a servant of Yeshua Messiah, called (kletos) to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God,
Called is the Greek word κλητός kletos (G2822). The words “to be” are not in the original Greek. It is not that Paul is called to be an apostle. Paul has that title and is in the office of the apostle. Paul is an apostle.
Romans 1:6-7
6 Among whom are you also the called (kletos) of Yeshua Messiah. 7 To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called (kletos) to be saints. Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Yeshua Messiah.
Called is the Greek word κλητός kletos (G2822). Again, the words “to be” are not in the original Greek. Believers are called of Yeshua. It is not that believers are to be saints, they are saints. The called are those that have salvation.
When this word κλητός kletos (G2822) is used, it means that the individual is saved or in the office. Not that they will be called, but that they are.
Finally Yehudah 1.
1 Yehuda, the servant of Yeshua Messiah, and brother of Yaaqov, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Yeshua Messiah, and called (kletos).
Called is the Greek word κλητός kletos (G2822). Called means that these individuals are saved.
It is important to understand that κλητός kletos (G2822) is used as an adjective and not a verb. It describes something, it is not an action. The called in Matityahu 22:14 are those that have salvation, it is a description.
14 For many are called (kletos), but few are chosen (eklektos).
Chosen is the Greek word ἐκλεκτός eklektos (G1588). It means picked out of a larger group. The chosen come out of the called. They are a subset of those that have salvation. They are set aside from the larger number of believers. In the parable in Matityahu 22:1-13, there is one that never shows up at the wedding. It is the one that everyone waits upon, it is the Bride of Revelation 19:6-7.
6 And I heard as it were the voice of a Great Multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia. For the Lord God omnipotent reigned. 7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honor to Him. For the marriage of the Lamb is come, and His wife has made herself ready.
As discussed earlier, the Great Multitude is waiting for the Bride to make her entry. She is the subset of the called.
Revelation 17:14
14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them. For He is Lord of lords, and King of kings. And they that are with Him are called (kletos), and chosen (eklektos), and faithful.
The ones with Him are not just the called. They are the ones that are a subset of those that are both chosen and faithful. Very few in this lifetime can honestly claim, without reservation, that they have been faithful like these. If one wants to go beyond the altar of life, they need to quit kidding themselves. To rule and reign with Messiah in the future or even have victory in this lifetime, it will take a lot more than most of us are willing to give.
To be in the class of the Bride, those who are chosen, is to be in a special class of believers. It was no different in Temple times. To get beyond the Court of Yisrael and past the Altar, it was different class of people that lived a more sanctified life dedicated to service. The difference in the future is, it will not be because of physical bloodline. For many, they will never get into the throne room with Messiah, because they have chosen not to. Maybe not always consciously, but they have chosen the lesser path in life.
Chosen in Messiah
Chosen in Messiah
Revelation 14 discusses some of the characteristics of those chosen, Revelation 14:1-3.
1 And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the Mount Tziyyon, and with Him a hundred forty four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads. 2 And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder. And I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps. 3 And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders and no man could learn that song but the hundred forty four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.
No one can learn that song, but the 144,000. They are a special, elect group of people. Revelation 14 is not speaking of the body of believers being limited to 144,000, that is not the case. There is an elect group within the body of believers known as the 144,000, Revelation 14:4.
4 These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever He goes. These were redeemed from among men, the firstfruits to God and to the Lamb.
These have not been defiled by women. That does not necessarily mean that they are all males. In the context of the Bible, this is not just a physical act, it is also a spiritual one, 2 Corinthians 11:2.
2 For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy. For I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present a chaste virgin to Messiah.
Paul wrote this to both Jew and non-Jewish born, to male and female. To be chaste virgins to Messiah, means that one has not defiled themselves with the Harlot religion, 2 Corinthians 11:3.
3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Messiah.
When it states these were not defiled with women, the body of believers is likened to a wonderful, glorious virgin in betrothal status without spot or wrinkle. Therefore, when Revelation 14:4 states to be defiled with women, it is referring to the harlot of Revelation 17. The true body of Messiah are the virgins, some of which will be in the Bride. The false church, which only names His name with empty professing, does not follow His word and does not practice His atonement, these are part of the Harlot. God does not want His people corrupted from the simplicity that is in Messiah or to be defiled with the Harlot religion, false religion, Revelation 14:4.
4 These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever He goes. These were redeemed from among men, the firstfruits to God and to the Lamb.
This is referring to footstep followers of Messiah. These are the ones that diligently ensure that they precisely walk in His footsteps in the newness of the Spirit.
However, we were not saved because we were a footstep follower of Messiah. We are saved by grace through faith, not of works, Romans 6:23.
23 For the wages of sin death; but the gift of God eternal life through Yeshua Messiah our Lord.
In this lifetime, no one is saved by following Messiah. Yet, saved people should want to follow Messiah. The 144,000 followed Him wherever He went, they are redeemed among men, being firstfruits to God and to the Lamb, Revelation 14:5.
5 And in their mouth was found no guile. For they are without fault before the throne of God.
Guile is from the Greek word δόλος dolos (G1388). It is in the Bible 12 times. δόλος dolos (G1388) is translated guile 7 times, subtilty 2 times, deceit 2 times and craft 1 time. Guile is often associated with slander, that is a misrepresentation of the concept. Guile actually means to be insidious, cunning, deceptive or duplicity. It means primarily “a bait, snare”; hence, to deceive in some way. It is simply a hypocrite.
In the terms of the Bible, a hypocrite is one that claims to be a Christian or follow the word, yet they are not pursuing God as He would have them.
This sets apart those chosen from those who are only called, no guile. Those who are chosen pursue God with all their heart and soul. It does not mean they are perfect. They are in a state of continuous repentance. This is the elect of God. These potentially will be in the Bride of Messiah. They are the subset, the elect ones.
In the future, there will be different classes of believers. What we do in this lifetime will determine where we will be in the future.
Moving to Yerushalayim
Moving to Yerushalayim
Devarim 18:6-7
6 And if a Levite come from any of your gates out of all Yisrael, where he sojourned, and come with all the desire of his mind to the place which Yehovah shall choose; 7 then he shall minister in the name of Yehovah his Redeemer, as all his brethren the Levites, which stand there before Yehovah.
There is always the possibility that a Levite may leave his city to minister in the place that Yehovah chooses. This could be either temporary or permanent. There are examples of both of these in Scriptures.
Originally, the Levites were to transport the items related to the Mishkan and the Ohel Moed. When Yisrael finally settled in the land, this would no longer be necessary. Unless God decided to move the place where He would put His name. Originally, this was Shilo, Yehoshua 18:1.
1 And the whole congregation of the Children of Yisrael assembled together at Shilo, and set up the Ohel Moed there. And the land was subdued before them.
The Ark of the Covenant remained there until it was taken by the Pelishtim in Battle. Eventually, the Pelishtim returned it when it became more than they bargained for. After that, the Ark of the Covenant would find its way to the City of Daviyd through the efforts of Daviyd.
Prior to building the Temple, Daviyd set up a rotation for both Priests and Levities. This can be found in 1 Divre Hayyamim 23 and 24.
Devarim 18:8
8 They shall have like portions to eat, beside that which comes of the sale of his father’s.
The Levite that took residence in the city, where Yehovah placed His name, was to be treated the same as those that lived in the city. If the individual happened to take permanent residence, the sale of their father’s land or home could not be considered when dividing the portions.
There was a time when the Levites left their cities to take permanent residence in Yerushalayim. After the reign of Shelomo, the Kingdom split into the Northern and Southern Kingdoms, Yisrael and Yehuda. During the reign of Rechavam, many of the Levities and Priests left the Northern Kingdom and took residence in Yehuda, 2 Divre Hayyamim 11:13-16.
13 And the priests and the Levites that in all Yisrael resorted to him out of all their coasts. 14 For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession, and came to Yehudah and Yerushalayim. For Yerovam and his sons had cast them off from executing the priest’s office to Yehovah. 15 And he ordained him priests for the high places, and for the devils, and for the calves which he had made. 16 And after them out of all the tribes of Yisrael such as set their hearts to seek Yehovah Redeemer of Yisrael came to Yerushalayim, to sacrifice to Yehovah Redeemer of their fathers.
In this case, those that left the Northern Kingdom may not have sold their lands. They may have just vacated them to return to the Southern Kingdom to serve Yehovah.
Do Not Learn Their Ways
Do Not Learn Their Ways
Devarim 18:9
9 When you are come into the land which Yehovah your Redeemer gives you, you shall not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
This statute has been repeatedly violated throughout time. Not only have the Yehudim learned the ways of the Nations, Christians followed suit in many ways. However, different than the Yehudim, the Christians have fully adopted the ways of the Heathens. Then they went several steps further by embracing the heathen abominations and calling them Chrisitan sacraments and traditions. Even worse, the Christians have completely rejected any notion of observing the commandments, statutes and judgments set forth in Torah. They ignored Yeshua’s words in Matityahu 5:20.
20 For I say to you, That except your righteousness shall exceed of the Scribes and Pharisees, you shall in no case enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.
Rather than trying to understand that they could learn from the Scribes and Pharisees, they rejected all to retain the abomination of those outside the Kingdom. As a result, it has placed many far from the Kingdom of God.
Devarim 18:10-11
10 There shall not be found among you that makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, that uses divination, an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, 11 or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
These are just a few of the things that the Nations did that Yisrael was not to do. In each item, Yisrael followed the ways of the Heathens at some time. Some of these have far-reaching effects. Today, many would deny that they are doing these things. However, they have become so commonplace, few would recognize them for what they really are. Probably the best way to avoid many of these items is to go back to the basics that were taught by the earliest believers. Just after baptizing 3000 souls, the believers implemented Acts 2:42.
42 And they continued steadfastly in the Apostles’ Doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
They did basically four things and they did them consistently:
· Apostles’ Doctrine.
· Fellowship.
· Breaking of Bread
· Prayers.
Rather than learn the ways of the Nations, we should learn what the Apostles did.
Some of these may not be what many assume. What the Apostles did is very different from what many do today. They did 4 things, and they were devoted to these things. We ought to pay attention. It might be why things are different today as compared to the First Century. And, why the power of the faith is minimal at best today.
Apostles’ Doctrine
Apostles’ Doctrine
First, they continued in the Apostles’ Doctrine, Yochanan 17:20.
20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on Me through their word;
Yeshua prayed that future believers would believe on Him through the words of those present with Him. Those present with Yeshua were the Apostles. Not me nor any great teacher today or in the last 2000 years. This includes the Church Fathers, who so many are enamored by. It was the Apostles that were present. It was the Apostles that transcribed and transferred the words of Yeshua to us. Paul clarified further in Ephesians 3:2-5.
2 If you have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward. 3 How that by revelation He made known to me the mystery; as I wrote afore in few words, 4 Whereby, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Messiah. 5 Which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it is now revealed to His holy Apostles and Prophets by the Spirit;
Throughout history and especially today, there are a lot of people writing books. However, only the Apostles of the First Century were commissioned to write the Bible. There is only one Book and only one Apostle’s Doctrine. It is the Book least study by Christians. Few dedicate consistent in-depth study of the Bible in the Spirit. We are told in Ephesians 2:20-22.
20 And are built upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Yeshua Messiah Himself being the chief corner; 21 in whom all the building fitly framed together grows to a holy Temple in the Lord. 22 In whom you also are builded together for a habitation of God through the Spirit.
The Apostle and Prophets are the foundation we are to build off of. We must ensure that we have not deterred from this foundation in any way. It is the connecting link to Yeshua. That is why we must heed 2 Corinthians 13:5.
5 Examine yourselves, whether you be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know not your own selves, how that Yeshua Messiah is in you, except you be reprobates?
If we do not examine ourselves and what we do in worship, we may find that we are far from the home we belong.
If one careful studies the Apostles’ Doctrine, they will discover that we are to be Torah observant. Yeshua was not trying to start a new religion. He was bringing us back to the original faith of Yehovah.
The Apostles’ Doctrine is what we must study and teach. The Apostles’ Doctrine is what leads us out of Spiritual Bavel and gets Spiritual Bavel out of us. It ensures that we do not learn the ways of those Yehovah finds abominable.
Too often many claim to have left spiritual harlotry behind only to find it is still deep inside them. Only through the Apostles’ Doctrine can the cleansing be complete.
It is unfortunate that we as believers have traded the Apostles’ Doctrine for men’s traditions. Through the ages Christians have compromised the faith to promote growth. What good is growth if it is not done as Yehovah would have us do it?
We need to learn and continue steadfast in the Apostles’ Doctrine if we are to have the First Century in the 21st Century. Which means we need to stick to the confines of the Bible and not allow for an individual’s personal interpretation. Even if it means, we have to change to do what the Bible states. This will make us different than many others.
Fellowship
Fellowship
Again Acts 2:42
42 And they continued steadfastly in the Apostles’ Doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
In the First Century, there was also fellowship. This is not fellowship as some may equate it today. Such as, eating a meal together or having a social gathering.
Fellowship comes from the Greek word κοινωνία koinonia (G2842). It is in the Bible 20 times. κοινωνία koinonia (G2842) is translated fellowship 12 times, communion 4 times, communication 1 time, distribution 1 time, contribution 1 time and to communicate 1 time. As κοινωνία koinonia (G2842) is used in the Bible, it refers to a spiritual partnership that involves some intimacy.
It is important to understand that the four things in Acts 2:42, Apostles’ Doctrine, Fellowship, Breaking of Bread and Prayer are spiritual activities.
If one takes the times to see how κοινωνία koinonia (G2842) is used, it will become obvious that it is referring to spiritual activities.
1 Corinthians 1:9
9 God faithful, by Whom you were called to the fellowship (koinonia) of His Son Yeshua Messiah our Lord.
Fellowship is the Greek word κοινωνία koinonia (G2842). This is referring to a spiritual relationship with Messiah.
2 Corinthians 8:4
4 Praying us with much entreaty (paraklesis) that we would receive the gift, and the fellowship (koinonia) of the ministering to the saints.
Fellowship is the Greek word κοινωνία koinonia (G2842). Ministering to the saints is not done alone. It should be done in a congregation among spiritual believers.
2 Corinthians 9:13
13 Whiles by the proof (dokime) of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection to the gospel of Messiah, and for liberal distribution (koinonia) to them, and to all;
Distribution is the Greek word κοινωνία koinonia (G2842). This is referring to charity and supporting others as in a congregation. This requires a spiritual connection if it is to be done properly.
2 Corinthians 13:14
14 The grace of the Lord Yeshua Messiah, and the love of God, and the communion (koinonia) of the Holy Spirit, with you all. Amen.
Communion (koinonia) is the Greek word κοινωνία koinonia (G2842). This refers to a spiritual relationship.
Ephesians 3:9
9 And to make all see what the fellowship (koinonia) of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world has been hid in God, who created all things by Yeshua Messiah.
Fellowship is the Greek word κοινωνία koinonia (G2842). The context of all these are in a body of believers in spiritual union. Probably the best example is in 1 Yochanan 1:3-7.
3 That which we have seen and heard declare we to you, that you also may have fellowship (koinonia) with us. And truly our fellowship (koinonia) is with the Father, and with his Son Yeshua Messiah. 4 And these things write we to you, that your joy may be full. 5 This then is the message which we have heard of Him, and declare to you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship (koinonia) with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship (koinonia) one with another, and the blood of Yeshua Messiah His Son cleanses us from all sin.
Each time fellowship is used in 1 Yochanan 1:3-7, it is the Greek word κοινωνία koinonia (G2842). κοινωνία koinonia (G2842) refers to spiritual fellowship. It is the gathering together of the saints. These are all spiritual activities being discussed. It was spiritual fellowship that was being referred to in Acts 2:42. Spiritual fellowship is the gathering of the saints in a holy convocation so we can accomplish those things above. That is why we are told in Hebrews 10:25.
25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some; but exhorting. And so much the more, as you see the day approaching.
We are to assemble together for spiritual ministering. We are to be a body that meets together to be spiritual joined. Maybe that is why there are 58 or 59 Holy Convocations in the year.
We are to meet together because we are told to, Hebrews 10:23-24.
23 Let us hold fast the profession of faith without wavering; for He faithful that promised; 24 and let us consider one another to provoke to love and to good works.
It is through this fellowship that we actually encourage each other. Also, we are to provoke each other to good works and love. To spend time in spiritual matters with someone is to reach their inner most being. This builds relationships that will last into eternity. Most importantly, we meet together to fulfill Ephesians 4:15-16.
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into Him in all things, which is the head, Messiah. 16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplies, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, makes increase of the body to the edifying of itself in love.
Through body ministry, people are healed and they will mature spiritually and emotionally.
People who do not take coming together seriously, ought not to expect that God will take them serious. We are to come together as God prescribes in spiritual fellowship.
Breaking of Bread
Breaking of Bread
Thirdly, they continued in the breaking of bread. This is not referring to the eating of meals. This too is referring to a spiritual activity, 1 Corinthians 11:20-22.
20 When you come together therefore into one place, is not to eat the Lord’s supper. 21 For in eating every one takes before his own supper. And one is hungry, and another is drunken. 22 What? Have you not houses to eat and to drink in? Or despise the assembly of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this? I praise not.
Paul clearly distinguishes between carnal eating and the spiritual significance of the Lord’s Supper. Breaking of Bread refers to the Lord’s Supper, 1 Corinthians 10:16.
16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion (koinonia) of the blood of Messiah? The bread which we break, is it not the communion (koinonia) of the body of Messiah?
The breaking of bread is communion. In the First Century, Communion was something they did together and they did it often. It had great spiritual significance as it should today. We should never take communion lightly and we should do it often in the body of believers.
Prayer
Prayer
Finally in Acts 2:42.
42 And they continued steadfastly in the Apostles’ Doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Prayer was something they actively and constantly did in the First Century. They did it together quite often. It was a big part of their lives. Today, we should appreciate the importance of prayer, Acts 1:14.
14 These all continued with one accord (homothumadon) in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Miryam the mother of Yeshua, and with his brethren.
In one accord means they prayed in one spiritual mind to God. This is Body Ministry.
This should always be our goal when we come together in a fellowship. We should pray to be in one accord, Acts 3:1.
1 Now Peter and Yochanan went up together into the Temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth.
In the First Century, they even prayed in the Temple.
Acts 12:12
12 And when he had considered, he came to the house of Miryam the mother of Yochanan, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.
Acts 20:36
36 And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled down, and prayed with them all.
And Acts 21:5
5 And when we had accomplished those days, we departed and went our way; and they all brought us on our way, with wives and children, until out of the city and we kneeled down on the shore, and prayed.
The believers in the First Century prayed often and wherever they happened to be. Prayer was important.
Today, I am sure we do not pray often enough. Prayer is our connecting link with God and with each other, Romans 12:12.
12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;
We should be instant in prayer.
For many Christians, prayer is what they do after they have exhausted all other avenues. Prayer should always be our first line of defense and communication. It should be our first option in all events, Romans 15:30.
30 Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Yeshua Messiah’s sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me;
There are times when it is important that we pray in agreement with others, Colossians 4:3.
3 Withal praying also for us, that God would open to us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Messiah, for which I am also in bonds.
Paul asked them to pray for him. Do not expect others to pray for you if you do not ask them. Do not keep people guessing, let them know your needs. And mostly pray often and for others as the Spirit leads you.
First Century Life
First Century Life
Acts 2:42
42 And they continued steadfastly in the Apostles’ Doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
We should take to heart Acts 2:42 if we are serious about First Century Life in the 21st Century. It is the best way to avoid the abomination of the Nations. Unfortunately it has infected even the Messianic Movement that models itself somewhat like the Rabbis.
We too should continue steadfastly in the Apostles Doctrine, Fellowship, Breaking of Bread and Prayer. These are 4 simple things if we would do them on a consistent basis, we would see a life filled with victory. That is what happened in the First Century, Acts 2:43.
43 And fear came upon every soul and many wonders and signs were done by the Apostles.
They saw many signs and wonders as a result of their chosen lifestyle, Acts 2:44-46.
44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common; 45 and sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all, as every man had need. 46 And they, continuing daily with one accord (homothumadon) in the Temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
They had community relationship. They were in one accord, Acts 2:47.
47 Praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the assembly daily such as should be saved.
They grew in numbers and had favor with others. All they did was four things, but they did them consistently. That is a lot easier to remember than what most want us to do.
This may seem like a lot, but remember we started with Devarim 18:9.
9 When you are come into the land which Yehovah your Redeemer gives you, you shall not learn (lamad) to do after the abominations of those nations.
We are not to learn their ways. The best way to avoid learning their ways is to learn our ways and continue in them steadfastly. That way, there is no time to even notice their ways.
Complete Before Yehovah
Complete Before Yehovah
Devarim 18:12
12 For all that do these things an abomination to Yehovah. And because of these abominations Yehovah your Redeemer does drive them out from before you.
Because of the lifestyle these nations lived, they were kicked out of the land. It can happen to us as it happened to Yisrael twice. We can be kicked out of the Spiritual Kingdom just as well.
Devarim 18:13
13 You shall be complete (tamiym) with Yehovah your Redeemer.
Complete (formerly perfect) comes from the Hebrew word תָּמִים tamiym (H8549). It is in the Bible 91 times. תָּמִים tamiym (H8549) is translated without blemish 44 times, perfect 18 times, upright 8 times, without spot 6 times, uprightly 4 times, whole 4 times, sincerely 2 times, complete 1 time, full 1 time and 3 miscellaneous words. It refers to something that is complete, entire, whole, wholesome, unimpaired, innocent, having integrity. Such that it is complete or entirely in accord with truth and fact. Basically, it is entire, either literally, figuratively or morally.
The people of God are to avoid the idolatrous practices of the Kenaani. We are to be complete or unblemished with respect to Yehovah our Redeemer. Used in such contexts, תָּמִים tamiym (H8549) refers to meeting all the requirements of Torah. If not, we are to rectify the situation immediately.
תָּמִים tamiym (H8549) is scattered throughout the Bible with 51 of the uses of תָּמִים tamiym (H8549) in passages dealing with offerings. תָּמִים tamiym (H8549) means “complete,” in the sense of the entire or whole thing. These refer to the condition of the animal to be offered. It cannot have any irregularities no matter how minor they may seem. The importance of this cannot be over emphasized. Yehovah speaks of this in Malakhi 1:6-8.
6 A son honors father and a servant his lord. If then I a Father, where My honor? And if I a Lord, where My fear? Says Yehovah of hosts to you, priests, that despise My name. And you say, Wherein have we despised your name? 7 You offer polluted bread upon My Altar; and you say, Wherein have we polluted You? In that you say, The table of Yehovah contemptible. 8 And if you offer the blind for sacrifice, not evil? And if you offer the lame and sick, not evil? Offer it now to your governor; will he be pleased with you or accept your person? Says Yehovah of hosts.
We cannot offer just anything we want to. We must consider if it is acceptable to Him. We must remember that His standard for sacrifice is perfection, complete. We must keep this in mind as an example for us to pursue in our walk. We must meditate on this and consider the words of Tehilla 119:1.
1 Blessed the undefiled (tamiym) in the way, who walk in the Torah of Yehovah.
Undefiled is the Hebrew word תָּמִים tamiym (H8549). This is the starting point to walk with God. Anything less requires immediate change to conform to His righteousness. We must take this seriously if we are to fulfill Romans 12:1.
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, your reasonable service.
Reasonable service starts with an undefiled individual, Romans 12:2.
2 And be not conformed to this world. But be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Perfect is the Greek word τέλειος teleios (G5046). Although translated perfect 17 times of its 19 uses, it refers to one who is complete. The impossibility of being perfect is realized when one fails time and times again. We must understand that we are not to be perfect, we are to be complete. Complete is one who understands the basic standards of Torah, walks in the newness of the Spirit and is in a continuous state of repentance. As such, sin is not accounted to the individual. It is rectified by the blood through forgiveness and repentance.
Observers of Times
Observers of Times
Devarim 18:14
14 For these nations, which you shall possess, hearkened to observers of times, and to diviners, but as for you, Yehovah your Redeemer has not suffered you so.
“Observers of times” comes from the Hebrew word עָנַן anan (H6049). It is in the Bible 11 times. עָנַן anan (H6049) is translated observer of times 5 times, soothsayer 2 times, bring 1 time, sorceress 1 time, enchanter 1 time and Meonenim 1 time. It is used only as a denominative from עָנָן anan (H6051).
עָנָן anan (H6051) is in the Bible 87 times. It is translated cloud 81 times and cloudy 6 times. Three-quarters of the time these refer to the pillar of cloud which directed Yisrael through the desert or represented Yehovah presence over the Mishkan.
Another Hebrew word commonly used for cloud is שַׁחַק shachaq (H7834). It is in the Bible 21 times. שַׁחַק shachaq (H7834) is translated cloud 11 times, sky 7 times, heaven 2 times and small dust 1 times. It typically refers to what we see with our eye. This is not necessarily a spiritual manifestation; however, the physical many be used figuratively. This will not be discussed any further.
עָנַן anan (H6049) is typically used as a verb. Its meaning is somewhat uncertain, as the above list of variant translations demonstrates. The root word seems to indicate that this word is a variety of occultism connected with the clouds. Since the future was determined by the position of the stars (astrology), or by examination of the liver of a sacrificed animal (hepatoscopy) as in Yechezqel 21:21.
21 For the king of Bavel stood at the parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use divination. He made arrows bright, he consulted with images, he looked in the liver.
Even as there are modern tea-leaf readers and palm readers, the reading and interpretation of cloud patterns seems a natural explanation. Another suggestion is that this is an onomatopoetic word. The sound of the word is the sound made by the one performing the art. Similarly, some say that נָחָשׁ nachash (H5175), a parallel word, is the snake-like hiss made by a “sorcerer.” Whatever the practice is, it is forbidden by God.
This is often of issue because of Galatians 4:10.
10 You observe days, and months, and times, and years.
Many equate observing times with the Feasts in Torah. The only problem with that is Torah forbids observing times, yet commands us to keep the Feasts. Therefore, observing times cannot be the Feasts found in the Hebrew Scriptures. To conclude otherwise would be a contradiction in itself and nothing would make sense from there.
The Importance of Moshe
The Importance of Moshe
Devarim 18:15
15 Yehovah your Redeemer will raise up to you a Prophet from the midst of you, of your brethren, like to me; to Him you shall hearken;
Moshe tells the people that Yehovah will raise up a prophet. On the surface, this is no great revelation. Many prophets would be raised up. There are books filled with various prophets and their prophecies. The question is, what is so special about this prophet?
This prophet would be like Moshe and this prophet the people will have to hearken to. They will not be able to ignore this prophet. Meaning if they do, there will be severe consequences, possibly irreparable. Again, that in itself is true about any prophet, or is it? We are not to ignore any prophet of Yehovah. If Yehovah sends a prophet, it is for a reason. We should immediately take time to listen and execute what they tell us to do.
What makes this prophet different is that they were to be like Moshe. We need to understand what is unique about Moshe. Probably the best explanation comes in Bemidbar 12, when Miryam and Aharon spoke against Moshe. Although the initial issue was about Moshe’s wife, it was actually about a common subject today, Bemidbar 12:2.
2 And they said, Has Yehovah indeed spoken only by Moshe? Has He not spoken also by us? And Yehovah heard.
On the surface, they wanted to be recognized as individuals that heard from Yehovah. If that was all it was, they could have easily moved forward that day. However, one of the individuals wanted a bit more that day. It seems one of them wanted the preeminence. Some may think that Miryam and Aharon had basis; however, one cannot simply make a grab for authority in the hierarchy of Yehovah. They must be called of Yehovah. That day, Miryam and Aharon may have mis stepped. Yehovah heard them and called all three before the Ohel Moed. There were probably others that heard the conversation that day. Yehovah tells all three in Bemidbar 12:6-8.
6 And He said, Hear now My words. If there be a prophet among you, Yehovah will make Myself known to him in a vision, will speak to him in a dream. 7 My servant Moshe not so, who faithful in all My house. 8 With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of Yehovah shall he behold. Wherefore then were you not afraid to speak against My servant Moshe?
What is being stated here is a significant demarcation between prophets. That day, Moshe was in a class of His own. Few can realistically claim to speak to Yehovah mouth to mouth. Even today few can make that claim. The only ones we know for sure that have spoken mouth to mouth with Yehovah to this day are Moshe and the Prophet like Moshe.
Additionally, Yehovah tells us that there are two levels of prophecy. The first being, a prophet that hears from God through visions, dreams or dark sayings. The second level of prophecy is to speak with Yehovah mouth to mouth. The difference being, the first requires interpretation. The second requires no interpretation. Most of us hear on the first level.
Within Bemidbar 12, Yehovah tells why Moshe is on the second level. Moshe had cultivated two characteristics, Bemidbar 12:3.
3 Now the man Moshe very meek, above all the men which upon the face of the earth (adamah).
And the second was in Bemidbar 12:7. They are:
· Bemidbar 12:3, be very meek or exceedingly filled with humility.
· Bemidbar 12:7, servant of Yehovah that is faithful in all His House.
This pretty much disqualifies most of us. It will take a lifetime to achieve this. But if you are serious about your walk, it is a small price to pay to know Yehovah as Moshe and the Prophet like Moshe did. You may never achieve these, but there are dividends along the way.
The importance of Moshe should never be minimized. Even Yeshua recognized this in Yochanan 5:46-47.
46 For had you believed Moshe, you would have believed Me. For he wrote of Me. 47 But if you believe not his writings, how shall you believe My words?
Although Yeshua recognized the importance of Moshe’s words, I am not sure many of His followers have. This includes those in Rabbinic Yehudim. It seems that people have reinterpreted Moshe’s words to mean things they were never meant to be. It is one thing to bring out the meaning. It is another to read into the words. We must be careful not to do the second. It results in 2 Peter 1:20.
20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the Scripture is of any private interpretation.
We should be very careful that we do not add or subtract from Moshe’s words. We must never forget that Torah, the words of Moshe, were direct from Yehovah. As such, we should never take Torah lightly. It is our lifeline to Yehovah.
Moshe told the people that a prophet like him would someday speak to them. This particular prophet the people must hearken to. This in itself presents some problems. One of which, the people must be alive to hear the prophet. This will have to be discussed subsequently.
People’s Desire
People’s Desire
Devarim 18:16
16 According to all that you desired of Yehovah your Redeemer in Chorev in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of Yehovah my Redeemer, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
This is referring back to an incident that happened after Yehovah had addressed the entire assembly of Yisrael. After Yehovah had spoken the 10 words, the people reacted in Shemos 20:18.
18 And all the people saw the voice (qol), and the lightnings, and the voice (qol) of the shofar, and the mountain smoking. And when the people saw, they removed, and stood afar off.
The people backed off and eventually told Moshe in Shemos 20:19.
19 And they said to (el) Moshe, Speak you with us, and we will hear. But let not Redeemer speak with us, lest we die.
The people feared for their lives. They did not see Yehovah as a benevolent and loving Redeemer, they saw Him as the one coming to chastise and potentially slay them.
To this day, not much has changed. It all started with Adam. After he had sinned, he hid himself. He was ashamed of what he had done and feared Yehovah, Bereishis 3:8.
8 And they heard the voice of Yehovah Redeemer walking in the garden in the Spirit (ruach) of the day. And Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yehovah Redeemer amongst the trees of the garden.
It seems we are always doing the same, one way or another. Rather than confess, repent and mature, we run and hide our sins. We fear that strict punishment is awaiting us. We do not trust in the love of the Father to help us through our problems. This mainly has to do with the way we picture Yehovah. In the future, there will be those who will make a statement similar to the man in the Parable of the Talents, Matityahu 25:24-25.
24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew you that you are a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not spread (diaskorpizo). 25 And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the earth. Lo, you have yours.
The vast majority of us have a fear of Yehovah, rather than a genuine love. This is not without reason. Most of us are in rebellion, doing what we desire. We do not want to follow the standard God has set forth. Many of us do not understand the standard and the benefits of it.
Either way, if given the chance, many of us would be strict disciplinarians. We lack the patience and the ability to help an individual mature. We think God will do what we would do. Just as our earthly fathers have done to us.
For the most part, we are on the wrong side of God’s standard. We do not understand how to get on the right side. As a result, many just avoid God’s standard or invalidate it all together. Heathens ignore and Christians invalidate God’s Standard. There is a small percentage that actually pursue Yehovah’s standard. These will help to bring forth the message of Devarim 18 in the future.
Prophet Like Moshe
Prophet Like Moshe
Devarim 18:17
17 And Yehovah said to me, They have well which they have spoken.
Yehovah was not blind to what was occurring. He understood all too well what the people were saying. It was rebellion of the worse kind. However, unlike many; Yehovah had the patience and solution for this rebellion that all would be in favor of, including the majority of the rebellious.
The real problem was the understanding of the people. Because of the way they were raised, they had an improper view of Yehovah. They saw no benefit in drawing close to God. They saw God through the eyes of their forefathers. Unfortunately, many did not know the true nature of Yehovah. They only saw what they experienced in the world and what many had told them. Most of which is skewed and misrepresents Yehovah.
Fortunately for us, Yehovah understands the need for an intermediary and the time required to help people transition to a proper understanding and maturity. As such, there will be a Prophet like Moshe.
Devarim 18:18-19
18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like to you, and will put My words in His mouth; and He shall speak to them all that I shall command Him. 19 And it shall come to pass, whosoever will not hearken to My words which He shall speak in My name, I will require of him.
Moshe is speaking these words, but they are words Yehovah told Moshe. These words carry a far reaching meaning we should be thoroughly familiar with.
It states in Devarim 34:10-12.
10 And there arose not a prophet since in Yisrael like to Moses, whom Yehovah knew face to face, 11 in all the signs and the wonders, which Yehovah sent him to do in the land of Mitzrayim to Pharaoh, and to all His servants, and to all His land, 12 and in all that mighty hand, and in all the great terror which Moshe showed in the eyes (ayin) of all Yisrael.
In all of the Hebrew Scriptures, there never arose a prophet like Moshe. Stephen will repeat Moshe words in Acts 7:37-38.
37 This is that Moshe, which said to the Children of Yisrael, a prophet shall the Lord your God raise up to you of your brethren, like to me; Him shall you hear. 38 This is he, that was in the assembly in the wilderness with the messenger (aggelos) which spoke to him in the mount Sinay, and our fathers. Who received the lively oracles to give to us.
From the context of Stephen’s discussion, it can be inferred who the prophet like Moshe is.
What is never discussed in all this is, Mount Chorev involved the First Generation out of Mitzrayim. The words in Devarim 18 were spoken to the Second Generation out of Mitzrayim. Further the words of Devarim 18 were repeated to every generation that followed to this day. Many of which never heard the Prophet like Moshe. The question is, how are we to hear this Prophet, because many never heard the Prophet like Moshe?
Restitution of All Things
Restitution of All Things
Peter will declare similar words. To fully understand the context, it is important to start in Acts 3:19-21.
19 Repent you therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; 20 and He shall send Yeshua Messiah, which before was preached to you. 21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of Restitution of All Things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began.
Now Peter is bringing in something that is not always associated with Yeshua. Peter states that God will send Yeshua. It should be obvious that Peter is referring to a future event. The event Peter is referring to is the Second Coming of Messiah. We know this, because Peter stated that Yeshua previously preached. As such, there has to be a Second Coming of the Messiah. That has yet to occur.
Additionally, Peter speaks of something called the “Restitution of All Things”. This phrase in not found anywhere else in the Bible. Regardless of that, Peter tells us that all the prophets of God have spoken of it. If you have never heard this before, possible you are not listening to a prophet of God. These prophets will be subsequently discussed.
Restitution comes from the Greek word ἀποκατάστασις apokatastasis (G0605). It is in the Bible one time. It refers to a restoration of the true theocracy prior to the fall, it is a perfect state. The purpose of the Restitution of All Things is to set all things in order as God had intended from the beginning.
ἀποκατάστασις apokatastasis (G0605) is sometimes translated refreshing or reformation. These words do not convey the full meaning of restitution.
Restitution can be compared to the difference between filling a pothole and restoring a road to a new pristine condition. When restituting a road, the entire surface is scraped up and a new bed of tar is laid. It is a whole new beginning. God is going to scrape this world clean. Then He will rule and reign in righteousness. Yeshua will be in heaven until the times of the Restitution of All Things begins.
In the future, God will be doing something beyond the normal comprehension of most human beings. It will be a complete balancing of accounts. When it is completed, it will be as if all the bad over the last 6000 years never occurred. During the Restitution of All Things a number of things will be happening. It will be the best outcome for all of mankind, believer and non-believer alike.
However, if you are not prepared for what is about to happen, you may find out you misappropriated your life on earth. Not that you will lose salvation, but there will be those during this time executing the Restitution. It will be more fulfilling than anything you have experienced up to this time. But if you are not preparing for it today, do not expect to be in the groups that will be fully commissioned by Yehovah to implement the plan.
Remember all the holy prophets spoke of this future. Ignorance will not be an acceptable excuse, Acts 3:22-23.
22 For Moshe truly said to the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up to you of your brethren, like to me; Him shall you hear in all things whatsoever He shall say to you. 23 And it shall come to pass, every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.
Peter says it somewhat different than what Moshe stated, but it is essentially the same. Peter tells us that we will hear this prophet.
As this discussion continues, it ought to be clear that both Stephen and Peter believe that Yeshua is the Prophet like Moshe.
Another Resurrection
Another Resurrection
Peter never states you cannot, because you are not there. We must hear the prophet. As such, God must have a plan for this to occur, 1 Timothy 2:3-4.
3 For this good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come to the knowledge (epignosis) of the truth.
Unlike many, God would have all saved. God has a love for all of creation. Peter tells us in 2 Peter 3:9.
9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
God is not looking to send people to the Lake of Fire. He is willing to ensure that all have the opportunity to hear the Prophet like Moshe. It is hard to witness to others if we do not know Yeshua as Moshe foreknew Yeshua. In the future, this will occur.
In 1 Timothy 2:4, knowledge comes from the Greek word ἐπίγνωσις epignosis (G1922). It is in the Bible 20 times. ἐπίγνωσις epignosis (G1922) is translated knowledge 16 times, acknowledging 3 times and acknowledgement 1 time. It refers to an exact or full knowledge of a subject. In this case, it is a full knowledge of salvation. God wants people to fully understand what is at stake.
This is different than what people receive today or in the last 2000 years. This is not all the knowledge of Yehovah. It is the necessary knowledge to understand the full extent of what a person is facing when deciding to accept or reject the offer of salvation. Few seem to understand this at the time they claim to have obtained salvation. Even years after the decision, few understand the full gambit of salvation. The question is how will God do this, 1 Timothy 2:5-6.
5 For one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Messiah Yeshua; 6 Who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
Paul tells us that there is a due time for all people. Remember, they will receive the full knowledge. What most base their decision of salvation on will pale in comparison to what will come forth in the future.
As such, many people have not seen the fulfillment of 1 Timothy 2:3-4 in their lives. These will have an opportunity in the future. This group of people is a lot more in numbers than many realize. There will be a resurrection in the future for this. Yeshua speaks of it in Yochanan 5:25-29.
25 Amen, amen, I say to you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God. And they that hear shall live. 26 For as the Father has life in Himself; so has He given to the Son to have life in Himself; 27 and has given Him authority to execute judgment (krisis) also, because He is the Son of man. 28 Marvel not at this. For the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear His voice, 29 and shall come forth; they that have done good, to the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment (krisis).
Paul refers to this in Acts 24:14-15.
14 But this I confess to you, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the Torah and in the Prophets. 15 And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.
In the future during the Restitution of All Things, many will hear the gospel message in its entirety for the first time. They will hear it with understanding. Not like today, when many deliver it as a take it or leave message.
And if one does not except, Peter tells us they will be destroyed. Peter never talks about an individual burning, that is heresy. That is put forth by those who do not know the true heart of God. He told us in Yirmeyahu 7:31.
31 And they have built the high places of Tofet, which in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded not, neither came it into My heart.
It never came into God’s heart to burn people for a second. Yet people expound on the concept of a burning hell. That may be their god, but that is not Yehovah of the Bible, nor is it a doctrine taught in the Bible. It is only immature believers and false prophets and teachers that state such things.
Peter continues in Acts 3:24.
24 Yes, and all the prophets from Shemuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.
Peter tells us that all the prophets have spoken of the Restitution of All Things. All the Prophets of the Bible discuss the Restitution of All Things. Every true prophet and teacher of God understands and discusses the Restitution of All Things. There is no excuse for not being thoroughly educated in this upcoming event. It is more important than anything else we will do in this lifetime. If you are unaware of it, find someone to explain it to you. It is that important.
Acts 3:25
25 You are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying to Avraham, And in your seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.
This underlines the importance of the Restitution of All Things. It addresses what Yehovah told Avram 4000 years ago in Bereishis 12:2-3.
2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing. 3 And I will bless them that bless you, and curse him that curses you. And in you shall all families of the earth (adamah) be blessed.
Up to this time in history, Bereishis 12:2-3 is unfulfilled. All the families of the earth are to be blessed by Avraham. That has not happened. It will not be fulfilled until the Restitution of All Things is fulfilled.
Acts 3:26
26 To you first God, having raised up His Son Yeshua, sent Him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
When Peter stated these things, he was speaking before a group of Yehudim. This would effectively fulfill Devarim 30:6-8.
6 And Yehovah your Redeemer will circumcise your heart, and the heart of your seed, to love Yehovah your Redeemer with all your heart, and with all your soul, that you may live. 7 And Yehovah your Redeemer will put all these curses upon your enemies, and on them that hate you, which persecuted you. 8 And you shall return and obey the voice of Yehovah, and do all His commandments which I command you this day.
Paul will declare similarly in Romans 11:25-27.
25 For I would not, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Yisrael, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. 26 And so all Yisrael shall be saved. As it is written, There shall come out of Tziyyon the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Yaaqov. 27 For this My covenant to them, when I shall take away their sins.
There is a great future ahead of us in the Restitution of All Things. It is not something that one wants to sit on the sidelines for. We need to make preparations for it now. When it comes, you will realize that everything else you did really did not matter. Now is the time to prepare. As Paul tells us in Philippians 3:13-14.
13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended. But one thing, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth to those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Messiah Yeshua.
Harlot Prophets & Teachers
Harlot Prophets & Teachers
Devarim 18:20
20 But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in My name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other redeemers, even that prophet shall die.
Today this may or may not be happening. In the future, this will definitely be happening. We need to be very careful what we prophesy or what we listen to. There is a difference between misunderstanding and error. One may misunderstand because a lack of maturity in the Word. Error comes from the one that walks outside the boundaries of Yehovah. This is more prevalent than many realize. Mainly because many so badly want to believe these people. They too are walking outside the boundaries.
Be very careful, ignorance is not an excuse, Hoshea 4:6.
6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, that you shall be no priest to Me. Seeing you have forgotten Torah of your Redeemer, I will also forget your children.
In the future, a lack of understanding will limit an individual severely.
Devarim 18:21
21 And if you say in your heart, How shall we know the word which Yehovah has not spoken?
This is a dilemma for most people today. Not because it is hard to understand, but because many are under false assumptions of the truth. It is hard to know the truth when error is so prevalent in the churches today. The only way to safeguard an individual is to quit listening to all the opinions and learn for yourself. Then find a body of likeminded believers who will allow one to discover truth for themselves.
We are to explain doctrine and allow the Spirit to lead people into understanding. Because of the maturity of most individuals that will take time. We need to learn to be patient and allow people to work through their salvation, Philippians 2:12-13.
12 Wherefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13 For it is God which works in you both to will and to do of good pleasure.
It takes time, patience and the Holy Spirit. No one learns all there is to know overnight. One who has a heart after God will soon discover the way to truth.
Sojourning with the Prophet
Sojourning with the Prophet
Devarim 18:22
22 When a prophet speaks in the name of Yehovah, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that the word (davar) which Yehovah has not spoken, the prophet has spoken it presumptuously (zadon). You shall not be sojourn (gur) with him.
Sojourn (formerly afraid) is the Hebrew word גּוּר gur (H1481). It is in the Bible 98 times. גּוּר gur (H1481) is translated sojourn 58 times, dwell 12 times, afraid 6 times, stranger 6 times, gather together 4 times, fear 3 times, abide 2 times, assemble 1 time, stand in awe 1 time, gathered 1 time, inhabitant 1 time, remain 1 time, sojourners 1 time and surely 1 time.
גּוּר gur (H1481) refers to one who dwells as a client or patron, sojourn. It is typically used as a verb. The root means to live among people who are not blood relatives. As such, rather than enjoying native civil rights, the stranger was dependent on the hospitality of the people. When the people of Yisrael lived with their neighbors, they were usually treated as protected citizens. Foreigners in Yisrael were largely regarded as proselytes.
The first occurrence of גּוּר gur (H1481) is in Bereishis 12:10.
10 And there was a famine in the land. And Avram went down into Mitzrayim to sojourn (gur) there; for the famine grievous in the land.
Avram journeyed to Mitzrayim and dwelt there as a stranger. He had no intentions of staying very long. In Bereishis 21:23, Avraham makes a covenant with Avimelekh.
23 Now therefore swear to me here by Redeemer that you will not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son’s son. According to the mercy (chesed) that I have done to you, you shall do to me, and to the land wherein you have sojourned (gur).
Isaac sojourned in Gerar, Bereishis 26:3.
3 Sojourn (gur) in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you; for to you, and to your seed, I will give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father;
Yisrael in Mitzrayim, Bereishis 47:4.
4 They said moreover to Pharaoh, For to sojourn (gur) in the land are we come; for your servants have no pasture for their flocks; for the famine sore in the land of Kenaan. Now therefore, we pray, let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen.
In the case of the Patriarchs, however, they became “protected” citizens in the promised land through the call of God. Hebrews 11:9 and Hebrews 11:13, describes them as pilgrims and strangers, evidence that they did not regard themselves as members of the sinful world.
9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Yitzchaq and Yaaqov, the heirs with him of the same promise.
And in Hebrews 11:13.
13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of and embraced and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
Many passages illustrate this meaning. Avraham, Yitzchaq and Yaaqov only sojourned in Kenaan, Shemos 6:4.
4 And I have also established My covenant with them, to give them the land of Kenaan, the land of their pilgrimage (magur), wherein they were strangers (ger).
Although Yitzchaq and Yaaqov were born there. The land had not been given to them because the iniquity of the Emori was not yet full. As such, they sojourned in the land that would eventually be the possession of their descendants.
Typically in cases when גּוּר gur (H1481) is translated other than sojourn, it has to do with a figurative understanding.
As such in Devarim 18:22 when it states, “You shall not be sojourn (gur) with him” it is similar to the concept of Tehilla 1:1.
1 Blessed the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful.
We are not to walk with these people. Their way is outside the boundaries of God. It is also a reminder that these will teach error. We should not be drawn to them even if the majority of people are in favor. They may be of the Harlot persuasion.
