Vayyiqra 20 (Leviticus 20)

Vayyiqra 20 almost seems to be a repeat of parts of Vayyiqra 18 and Vayyiqra 19.  However, there are significant differences.  Whereas Vayyiqra 18 and Vayyiqra 19 stated it was not allowed, Vayyiqra 20 has the penalty for violating the statute today and in the future to come.  Whereas Vayyiqra 18 was more about marital relationships, Vayyiqra 20 is the penalty for fornicating or adultery.  In most cases, there is a significant penalty that offers no return until the millennium.  If the law is a shadow of the reality, then there is message in all this that must be understood.  New Birth will help to resolve some of these conditions; however, some cannot be resolved until the advent of the Restitution of All Things.

Vayyiqra 20:1-2

1 And Yehovah spoke to Moshe, saying, Again, you shall say to the Children of Yisrael, Whosoever of the Children of Yisrael, or of the strangers that sojourn in Yisrael, that gives of his seed to Molech; he shall surely be put to death: the people of the land shall stone (ragam) him with stones (eben).

This issue is first discussed in Vayyiqra 18:21.

21 And you shall not let any of your seed pass through to Molech, neither shall you profane the name of your Redeemer: I Yehovah.

However, in Vayyiqra 18, it did not delineate the penalty for violating this statute.  Vayyiqra 20 delineates that one who gives their seed to Molech will be put to death by stoning.  This seems clear until one reads what is next.

Vayyiqra 20:3

And I will set My face (paniym) against that man (ish), and will cut him off from among his people (am); because he has given of his seed to Molech, to defile My Sanctuary, and to profane My holy name.

If someone is already dead, what is the point of cutting off the individual from the people?  They are dead; therefore, they are cut off.  Evidently not or why else would Yehovah state this?

These are referring to two different time periods.  Vayyiqra 20:2 is referring to the time prior to the millennium.  Vayyiqra 20:3 is referring to the millennium.  When the Resurrection of the Just and Unjust occurs in the millennium there will be numerous sins that have never been paid for or thoroughly rectified.  One of the major purposes of the Restitution of All Things is the balancing of accounts.  Somehow everything that has occurred has to be rectified or restituted.  If it is a sin, then it requires blood.  All sin must be paid for with a life, Devarim 24:16.

16 The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

Everyone must pay for their own sins that they have committed.  They pay for their sin with their life.  Or there is a second option to avoid the death of the individual.  One must find a suitable substitutionary sacrifice.  Prior to Yeshua, potentially an animal sacrifices could be offered.  However, in the case of this sin; if one is already been killed then there is no possibility of an animal sacrifice.

When this person is resurrected in the millennium, their sin is still not paid for.  If they want to avoid paying the ultimate price with second death, they must obtain a suitable substitutionary sacrifice.  The only suitable substitutionary sacrifice in the millennium will be Yeshua.  To access Yeshua, one will have to accept the terms of Yeshua’s offer.

So many think that one just accepts and it all works out.  That could not be further from the truth.  Salvation requires accepting His terms, then Yeshua will pay for the sin with His blood.  Paul warns us about this in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.

19 What? know not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit in you, which you have of God, and you are not your own? 20 For you are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

We are not our own.  We are not free to do whatever we decide.  We are to serve the master.  If we do not serve His will, we are in rebellion.  There are consequences to rebellion.  If one is in rebellion that is a sin.  Unknown to most believers, consequences for rebellion are part of New Birth.  If one sins after salvation, there must be repentance for that sin, 1 Yochanan 1:7-2:1.

But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Yeshua Messiah His Son cleanses us from all sin.  If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.  1 My little children, these things write I to you, that you sin not.  And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Yeshua Messiah the righteous.  And He is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the whole world.

This is where it gets complicated.  If all sin has to be paid for and one must confess a sin; therefore, there is no forgiveness without a confession that results in repentance.  If one does not realize that they sinned, it is unlikely the will repent in this lifetime.  This will become a major problem for many believers going into the millennium.  They will not lose Salvation, but these sin have to be rectified and restituted.

For those in the millennium, the individual accepts the substitutionary sacrifice of Yeshua.  Thereby, the sin is paid for and the individual becomes born again and all sin is paid for.

Then again, the individual may decide not to accept Yeshua’s offer.  This possibility exists in this present lifetime and the millennium.  Therefore, they must pay for the sin with their own blood and they will end up in the Lake of Fire.  In this way, God has cut them off from their and His people.

To completely restitute this issue, the child is also resurrected and is able to make a conscious decision of whether or not to accept God’s offer of salvation.  They may not, but that is their choice.

Restituting this issue will clear the land of the blood and prevent any sin from entering the Sanctuary.  Only born again individuals cleared of wrong doing will be allowed to access the Sanctuary.  Thereby preventing the defilement of Yehovah’s Sanctuary.  Additionally, the resurrecting and dealing with the issue in the millennium clears Yehovah’s name of any wrong doing or false accusations.  It will clearly identify the root cause, subsequent aftereffects and required condition to be corrected.  It provides the way to correct the wrong that was done.  In the end, it will be as if it had never occurred.  All individuals involved will have made a choice free from any hindrance or threat of reprisal.  It will be a clear choice for all individuals.

You may ask why would anyone choose the Lake of Fire over Eternity with God.  There are a number of reasons, none of which make sense to me.  However, it does not have to make sense to anyone one.  It is clear that this happens based on Revelation 20:7-9.

And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle.  The number of whom as the sand of the sea.  And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city.  And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them.

When Satan is loosed for a season, there will be those that follow him.  Hard to believe, but God would not state it if it were not true.

Vayyiqra 20:4-5

And if the people of the land do any ways hide their eyes (ayin) from the man (ish), when he gives of his seed to Molech, and kill him not.  Then I will set my face (paniym) against that man (ish), and against his family, and will cut him off, and all that go a whoring after him, to commit whoredom with Molech, from among their people (am).

The seriousness of this transgression cannot be underscored.  If one allows this go on and does not take action against the transgressor, they will be cut off.  This particular transgression of not taking action was committed far more often than the actual crime.  Unfortunately, the actual crime was committed too often in the open.  Not enough was done to stop these sins, 1 Melakhim 11:6-7.

And Shelomo did evil in the sight of Yehovah, and went not fully after Yehovah, as Daviyd his father.  Then did Shelomo build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moav, in the mountain that before Yerushalayim, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon.

Whether Shelomo himself sacrificed his children is unknown.  But to build a high place for Molech, only increases the likelihood of it happening in future generations.  Which did happen, Yirmeyahu 32:35.

35 And they built the high places of Baal, which in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through to Molech; which I commanded them not, neither came it into My mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Yehuda to sin.

There are many guilty of allowing this to occur unchecked.  These individuals will have to answer for this transgression in the millennium.

There is a spiritual component to this.  One who commits their children to worship the spiritual equivalent of Molech may be under the same penalty in the millennium.  This has occurred in the Harlot Churches across the world.  One ought to be careful what they do in worship.  All believers should heed Paul’s warning in 2 Corinthians 13:5-6.

Examine yourselves, whether you be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know you not your own selves, how that Yeshua Messiah is in you, except you be reprobates?  But I trust that you shall know that we are not reprobates.

We ought to know that our faith is His faith.  If one does not know based on the Word and the Spirit, they may find out that their worship was in vain.

Vayyiqra 20:6

And the soul (nephesh) that turns after such as have familiar spirits (ov), and after wizards (yiddoniy), to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face (paniym) against that soul (nephesh), and will cut him off from among his people.

Familiar spirits comes from the Hebrew word אוֹב ov (H0178).  It is in the Bible 17 times.  אוֹב ov (H0178) is translated familiar spirit 16 times and bottles 1 time.  אוֹב ov (H0178) is translated bottles in Iyyov 32:19.

19 Behold, my (Elihu) belly as wine has no vent; It is ready to burst like new bottles.

I suppose the translator had a reason for not translating אוֹב ov (H0178) familiar spirit; however, in light of Elihu, familiar spirit actually makes sense.  Both in a figurative and literal sense.  Elihu seems to be sent by Satan to incite a riot against Iyyov.

The first time אוֹב ov (H0178) is used is in Vayyiqra 19:31.

31 Regard not them that have familiar spirits (ov), neither seek after wizards (yiddoniy), to be defiled by them.  I Yehovah your Redeemer.

One is not to have anything to do with familiar spirits or wizards.  They hear from a spirit other than Yehovah.  We ought to avoid them at all costs.

Again, Yehovah will set His face against them and cut off the individual.  When it is stated that He will set His face against them, it demonstrates the seriousness of the transgression.  We see His face in the millennium.  If He set his face against an individual it is similar to Chavaqquq 1:13.

13 Of purer eyes than to behold evil and cannot look on iniquity.  Wherefore look upon them that deal treacherously, hold Your tongue when the wicked devours more righteous than he?

When it states that Yehovah cannot look on evil, it is not that He is unable.  It is that if Yehovah does look on evil, it goes through the Fires of Baptism and will be burnt up or vaporized.  In Chavaqquq , he wonders why God allows these things to occur.  Come the millennium, it will not be allowed.  At the appropriate time, many will be looked upon by Yehovah, if they have not accepted the substitutionary sacrifice, they will cease to exist.  For the wicked, their time is coming.

For now we ought to avoid these spirits, although they have infiltrated Christianity to some degree.  These come in the form of tares and carnal believers that assume authority outside of the Spirit.  We must root them out and ensure we hear from only His Spirit.

Vayyiqra 20:7

Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be you holy.  For I Yehovah your Redeemer.

There are statements similar to this throughout the Bible, Shemos 19:6.

And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.  These the words which you shall speak to the Children of Yisrael.

Yehovah is telling Moshe to tell the Children of Yisrael that they are to be a holy Nation.  They were to be a Kingdom of Priest.  Yisrael never answered this calling.

Several times Yehovah tells us to be a holy people, it is usually in relation to the commandments.  As such, the commandments are required for one to be holy.  Often these commandments set apart the follower from the rest of the world.  It places them in a Way different than others.  Yet today, that is completely disregarded by most Christians.

Part of the reason is, Christians do not understand what it means to be holy.  Holy simply means set apart to Yehovah.  As such, when the statement is used be you holy, one ought to consider the context of the passage.  This helps to describe what one must do to be holy.  Peter states in 1 Peter 1:15-16.

15 But as He which has called you is holy, so be you holy in all manner of way of life; 16 Because it is written, Be you holy; for I am holy.

To be holy requires us to be holy as He is holy.  When Yehovah states that we are to do something, we ought to do it, period.  If we do not do it, then we are not holy.  Therefore, we cannot expect a Holy God to want to commune with us.  One can be saved and not be holy.  That would be a condition of being in rebellion to God.

Vayyiqra 19 started with Vayyiqra 19:1-2

1 And Yehovah spoke to Moshe, saying,  Speak to all the congregation (edah) of the Children of Yisrael, and say to them, You shall be holy (qadosh): for I Yehovah your Redeemer holy (qadosh).

Being holy is an important issue to Yehovah.  It is the very reason why we must pursue righteousness.  If one is righteous, they will be holy.  But to do that, one must understand what God considers holy.  We can avoid being holy and righteous; however there are consequences, Hebrews 12:6-11.

For whom the Lord loves He chastens and scourges every son whom He receives.  If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is He whom the Father chastens not?  But if you be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are you bastards, and not sons.  Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected and we gave reverence.  Shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live?  10 For they verily for a few days chastened after their own pleasure; but He for profit, that might be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no chastening for the present seems to be joyous, but grievous.  Nevertheless afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to them which are exercised thereby.

God chastens us to bring out the fruit of righteousness, so that one is a partaker of His holiness.  Be careful what you reject in God’s word, there are consequences.  Learn what God considers holy and righteous.  Pursue that and chastening will be minimal if at all.

Vayyiqra 20:8

And you shall keep My statutes (chuqqah), and do them: I Yehovah which sanctify you.

This follows on the heels of being holy.  It ought to make sense that to be holy one needs to follow the statutes.  Remember these words in Hebrews 13:8.

Yeshua Messiah the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Obviously, this means from the beginning.  He said something then we ought to observe His words.  We are to keep the statutes.  That has been a requirement from the beginning, therefore it is for today and forever, Hebrews 13:9.

Be not carried about with diverse and strange doctrines. For a good thing that the heart be established with grace (charis); not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.

After telling us that all things are consistent, the writer of Hebrews tells us not to be carried away with diverse and strange doctrines.  From the context of the scripture, this would be any doctrine that states God has changed.  If God told us to keep statutes and Yeshua states that in Matityahu 5:18.

18 For verily I say to you, Until heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, until all be fulfilled.

We know the law had not all been fulfilled; therefore, the law is with us today.  Then it would be a diverse and strange doctrine to believe that the law is not for today.  Therefore, when Yehovah told the Children of Yisrael to keep the statutes, He meant us too.

Vayyiqra 20:9

For every one that curses (qalal) his father or his mother shall be surely put to death.  He has cursed his father or his mother; his blood upon him.

If one curses their father or mother, they should be put to death.  The question is how can the blood be on them if they have salvation?  To curse father or mother is more that one’s earthly parents.  Father refers to our Father in heaven.  Mother refer to the faith as Paul states in Galatians 4:26.

26 But Yerushalayim which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

Our faith comes from Heaven above.  It is not a faith of the Tradition of the Fathers.  To curse either of these today or in the millennium would be to reject the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and the substitutionary sacrifice of Yeshua.  If one does that they pay for their own sin with their blood.  Therefore, it is on them.

Vayyiqra 20:10

10 And the man that commits adultery with man’s wife, that commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

This is the first of 11 verses that describes forbidden sexual relationships.  These are regardless of inside a marriage or outside.  Outside of a marriage would go without saying.  The literal of these statutes should be easy to understand.  The figurative meaning is somewhat difficult to determine; however, one should pursue the depth of the meaning throughout their lifetime to guard themselves from transgressing against these statutes in the spiritual realm.

One should never commit adultery at any time, Mishlei 5:15-18.

15 Drink waters out of your own cistern and running waters out of your own well.  16 Let your fountains be dispersed abroad, rivers of waters in the streets.  17 Let them be only your own and not strangers’ with you.  18 Let your fountain be blessed.  And rejoice with the wife of your youth.

We ought to stay with the wife Yehovah gave us.  To often one gets frustrated with their spouse and looks elsewhere.  Many will spend more time pursuing illicit relationships, rather than consistently securing the one at home.  All relationships take work, stay with the one you have.  Love them from the beginning and there will never be a reason to look elsewhere, Mishlei 9:17-18.

17 Stolen waters are sweet and bread in secret is pleasant.  18 But he knows not that the dead there; her guests in the depths of sheol.

What may seem sweet will only bring tragedy in one’s life.  In the end, both the adulterer and the adulteress will suffer.

Vayyiqra 20:11

11 And the man that lies with his father’s wife has uncovered his father’s nakedness: both of them shall surely be put to death; their blood upon them.

One should stay away from their father’s wife.  It did not workout for Reuven and will not work out for us, Bereishis 35:22.

22 And it came to pass, when Yisrael dwelt in that land, that Reuven went and lay with Bilha his father’s concubine.  And Yisrael heard.  Now the sons of Yaaqov were twelve.

Reuven thought he could either do it in secret or exert his authority.  However, it did not end well for him, Bereishis 49:3-4.

3 Reuven , you my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength,

The excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power.  Unstable as water, you shall not excel; because you went up to your father’s bed; then you defiled.  He went up to my couch.

We do not excel by usurping another’s authority.  Figuratively, when one thinks they can usurp God’s authority in Spiritual matters, it will not work out well for them.  We cannot speak for God nor go beyond the commission that He has given us.

Vayyiqra 20:12

12 And if a man lie with his daughter in law, both of them shall surely be put to death: they have wrought confusion; their blood shall be upon them.

This is wrong in so many ways.  To lie with one’s spiritual daughter in law is to interfere in the spiritual matters of another brethren, when one was not asked to help.  This brings confusion to the spiritual authority.  We are not to overstep our spiritual boundaries.  If we do, then it is dead works.

Vayyiqra 20:13

13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood upon them.

This is considered sodomy.  It is an abomination.  In the Kingdom of God, it is just another form of lust.  God disallows it, it does not matter how one justifies it, it should not be done.

Figuratively, it is a form of Harlot worship.

Vayyiqra 20:14

14 And if a man take a wife and her mother, it is wickedness: they shall be burnt with fire, both he and they; that there be no wickedness among you.

One does not take a wife and her mother.  This causes relationship issues between the two women.  It will eventually cause the two to be foes when they may not have been before.  Although, having multiple wives was done in the Bible, it is not God’s preference, Bereishis 2:24-25.

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they shall be one flesh. 25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

The preferred marital relationship is one man and one woman.  Then there is no shame in the relationship.  Anything outside of this is not God’s best.  Just because something is allowed, does not mean it should be done.  When this occurs, one is outside God’s perfect will.

Vayyiqra 20:15-16

15 And if a man lie with a beast, he shall surely be put to death: and you shall slay the beast.  16 And if a woman approach to any beast, and lie down thereto, you shall kill the woman, and the beast: they shall surely be put to death; their blood upon them.

Neither man nor woman is to lay with a beast.  That is just out right wicked lust.  For this to occur the human would have degenerated to a low level of humanity.  Figuratively it would be a believer with a non-believer.  One must be equally yoked in the eyes of God.

Vayyiqra 20:17

17 And if a man shall take his sister, his father’s daughter, or his mother’s daughter, and see her nakedness, and she see his nakedness; it is a wicked thing; and they shall be cut off in the sight of their people: he has uncovered his sister’s nakedness; he shall bear his iniquity.

There should never be any sexual contact or uncovering of siblings whether related or by marriage.  Figuratively, this would be to violate the spiritual sanctity of a brother or sister in the faith.  We should never cause another to sin or even lead into sin.  We should always uphold the sanctity of another individual in the faith.  We must protect each other’s spirituality.  We must never take advantage of another.

Vayyiqra 20:18

18 And if a man shall lie with a woman having her sickness, and shall uncover her nakedness; he has discovered her fountain, and she has uncovered the fountain of her blood: and both of them shall be cut off from among their people.

This is disallowed in Vayyiqra 15.  The blood has to do with the sin.  During this time in the woman’s cycle, her body is going through a cleansing.  For her, it is a purification.  If a man then lies with her, he would become defiled by the blood.  Thereby, defiling himself and preventing the cleansing of the woman.  The man should respect the cycle of cleansing for the woman.

For a woman to voluntarily allow this, it would be an indication of the Harlot sin that was spread on mankind.  As such, this should be avoided in a marriage.

Vayyiqra 20:19-20

19 And you shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister, nor of your father’s sister: for he uncovers his near kin.  They shall bear their iniquity.  20 And if a man shall lie with his uncle’s wife, he has uncovered his uncle’s nakedness.  They shall bear their sin; they shall die childless.

Aunts whether biological or by marriage are not allowed.

Vayyiqra 20:21

21 And if a man shall take his brother’s wife, it is an unclean thing.  He has uncovered his brother’s nakedness; they shall be childless.

One is not to take a brother’s wife except for the following exception, Devarim 25:5-6.

If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without to a stranger.  Her husband’s brother shall go in to her, and take her to him to wife and perform the duty of an husband’s brother to her.  And it shall be, the firstborn which she bears shall succeed in the name of his brother dead, that his name be not put out of Yisrael.

This the law of the levirate vow.

 Vayyiqra 20:22

22 You shall therefore keep all my statutes (chuqqah), and all my judgments (mishpat), and do them: that the land, whither I bring you to dwell therein, spue you not out.

We were to keep the statutes and judgments of Yehovah to ensure that the land is not defiled.  Figuratively, sometimes the land refers to the people.  As the people are defiled so is the land and as the land is defiled so are the people.  We must be careful to not defile either, so as not to cause shame to come to the name of Yehovah.  He gave us a life filled with blessings.  We ought to protect and flourish what He has given us.  We should do this not only for ourselves, but for those we can affect in a way that shows God’s love.

Vayyiqra 20:23

23 And you shall not walk in the manners of the nation, which I cast out before you.  For they committed all these things, and therefore I abhorred them.

We are never to follow the ways of the other nations.  We are never to adopt their ways of worship.  No matter how appealing it may seem.  We are never to compromise our righteousness to please others.  It never works out well for either group.

Vayyiqra 20:24

24 But I have said to you, You shall inherit their land, and I will give it to you to possess it, a land that flows with milk and honey.  I Yehovah your God, which have separated you from people.

God had given us a land so that we would be separated from others.  We are not to be dependent on others, we are to be separated out and be dependent upon God, Matityahu 6:33.

33 But seek you first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.

If we seek God’s kingdom and His righteousness, then all will be provided.  This will allow us to be independent of others.  Then we would be a separate people.  We should never look for help from any other source other than Yehovah, Tehilla 18:1-3.

1 I will love You, Yehovah, my strength.  Yehovah my rock (sela), and my fortress (matsudah), and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.  I will call upon Yehovah, to be praised.  So shall I be saved from my enemies.

He is the only salvation and deliverer.  We need no other source when we walk in His righteousness.

Vayyiqra 20:25

25 You shall therefore put difference between clean beasts and unclean, and between unclean fowls and clean: and you shall not make your souls abominable by beast, or by fowl, or by any manner of living thing that creeps on the ground, which I have separated from you as unclean.

We are to observe the kosher laws.  But this is referring to more than that.  One must learn to live a sanctified and holy life in the midst of a present evil world.

Vayyiqra 20:26

26 And you shall be holy to Me.  For I Yehovah holy, and have severed you from people (am), that you should be Mine.

Again, we must be holy because Yehovah is holy.  We must honor our Father by following His example.  He is holy; therefore, we should pursue righteousness and be holy as He is holy.  There is no other option and there should be no other desire.

Vayyiqra 20:27

27 A man also or woman that has a familiar spirit (ov), or that is a wizard (yiddoniy), shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them.

It was previously stated in Vayyiqra 20:6

And the soul (nephesh) that turns after such as have familiar spirits (ov), and after wizards (yiddoniy), to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face (paniym) against that soul (nephesh), and will cut him off from among his people.

Now if one has a familiar spirit or is a wizard they should be put to death by stones.

This was to set Yisrael apart from all other nations.  We have the one spirit, God’s Spirit.  We do not need the many spirits of others.
