Acrostics
Acrostics
An acrostic is a poem in which the initial letters of each successive line forms a word, phrase, or pattern. The acrostic Tehillim use the twenty-two letters with a few slight variations of the Hebrew alphabet. The first word of the first verse begins with א (aleph), the first word of the second verse begins with ב (bet) and continues on.
In the Hebrew scriptures, there are numerous clear instances of acrostics. These are: Tehilla 25, Tehilla 34, Tehilla 37, Tehilla 111, Tehilla 112, Tehilla 119 and Tehilla 145. Additional acrostics are: Mishlei 31:10-31; Ekha 1-4. Some count Tehilla 9 and Tehilla 10 as one.
Tehilla 119 is the most complete acrostic Tehilla . It is the longest chapter of the Bible. It is divided into 22 sections, each titled after a letter of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Each of these sections has eight verses.
There are various reasons why acrostics are done.
- It is sometimes used as an artistic device to add a certain beauty, as a rhyme does in our poetry.
- It may indicate that the subject is being covered completely, from A to Z or א (aleph) to ת (tav). This is a particularly attractive possibility in regard to Tehilla 119, which explores the nature and value of the written Word of God exhaustively.
- The acrostic may have been a mnemonic device designed to assist the young in learning the Tehillim.
Asaf

The introduction of 12 Tehillim contains the name Asaf. In every case when there is the phrase “of Asaf”, it is the Hebrew לְאָסָף. לְאָסָף is the Hebrew word אָסָף Asaf (H0623) with the Hebrew prefix ל. This prefix usually means “to” or “for”; however, whenever it is used in combination with Asaf in Tehillim, it is translated “of”. Thereby indicating that Asaf wrote this particular Tehilla. Whether or not Asaf wrote all these Tehillim is not the issue of this discussion. What is at issue is the translation of the Hebrew prefix ל. It should have been translated “to” or “for”. This would indicate that the Tehilla is for Asaf and all who stand in the ministry of Asaf. Correction for introductions is below:
- A Psalm for Asaf: Tehilla 50, Tehilla 73, Tehilla 79, Tehilla 82.
- A Song or Psalm for Asaf: Tehilla 83.
- Maschil for Asaf: Tehilla 74, Tehilla 78.

Chief Musician comes from the Hebrew word נָצַח natsach (H5329). It is in the Bible 65 times. It is translated Musician 55 times, set forward 3 times, overseers 3 times, excel 1 time, oversee 1 time, perpetual 1 time and chief singer 1 time. Just from the variations of words that נָצַח natsach (H5329) is translated should indicate the obvious misunderstanding of the word. Too often, the translator assumes a meaning. While this word is used approximately 65 times in the Hebrew Scriptures, almost all of them (except for 5 or 6) are participles, used as verbal-nouns. The participial form has the meaning of “overseer, director,” reflecting the idea that one who is pre-eminent or conspicuous is an “overseer.” It is in the introduction of 55 different Tehillim. It is translated To the choirmaster in the JB and RSV. Other translations render it “choir director” (NASB); “chief musician” (KJV); and “leader” (NAB). The significance of this introduction is not clear. Of the 55 Tehillim involved, 39 are connected with the name of Daviyd, 9 with Qorach, and 5 with Asaf, leaving only two anonymous Tehillim. The Hebrew preposition meaning “to” or “for” which is used with this participle could mean assignment to the person named, or perhaps more reasonably, an indication of a collection of Tehillim known by the person’s name. This introduction is found also at the end of Chavaqquq 3, showing that this Tehilla was part of a director’s collection. Overseer is the appropriate translation.
Daviyd
Daviyd
There are 72 Tehillim that have the phrase “of David” in the introduction. In every case when there is the phrase “of David”, it is the Hebrew לְדָוִד. There is one additional Tehilla that has לְדָוִד in the introduction, Tehilla 145. Tehilla 145 states “David’s Psalm of praise.”
לְדָוִד is the Hebrew word דָּוִד Daviyd (H1732) with the Hebrew prefix ל. This prefix usually means “to” or “for”; however, whenever it is used in combination with Daviyd in Tehillim, it is translated “of”. Thereby indicating that Daviyd wrote this particular Tehilla. Whether or not Daviyd wrote all these Tehillim is not the issue of this discussion. What is at issue is the translation of the Hebrew prefix ל. It should have been translated “to” or “for”. This would indicate that the Tehilla is for Daviyd. However, not for King Daviyd; but for his descendant, Yeshua. It would be hard to believe that if Daviyd was the author, he would want credit for these Tehillim rather than expressing that they are for Messiah. For the following 73 Tehillim that have לְדָוִד in the introduction it will be changed from “of Daviyd” to “for Daviyd”.

- Maskil comes from the Hebrew word מַשְׂכִּיל maskiyl (H4905). It refers to a didactic poem, one that is intended to teach a spiritual concept.

- Miktam comes from the Hebrew word מִכְתָּם miktam (H4387). It is in the Bible 6 times. Its meaning is unknown. It is used only in the introduction of 6 Tehillim.

Neginoth or Neginah
Neginoth is the Hebrew word נְגִינָה negiynah (H5058). It is in the Bible 14 times. נְגִינָה negiynah (H5058) is translated Neginoth 6 times, song 5 times, stringed instruments 1 time, music 1 time and Neginah 1 time. It refers to an instrumental, implying the use of a stringed instrument; a poem set to music; specifically, an epigram. An epigram is a saying or remark expressing an idea in a clever and amusing way. נְגִינָה negiynah (H5058) is from נָגַן nagan (H5059). נָגַן nagan (H5059) refers to beat a tune with the fingers; especially to play on a stringed instrument; sing to the stringed instruments, melody, minstrel, player or playing.
נְגִינָה negiynah (H5058) usually indicates a joyful song. However, there are possibly 4 instances when the singers are mocking another individual. For the individual that is being mocked, it is probably not joyful to hear. For those singing, it is more than likely in a joyful manner. It is used in Chavaqquq 3:19 similar to the introduction of a psalm. The other 2 uses are joyful songs. It is נְגִינַת negiynath (H5058) in Tehilla 61 introduction.
It is in the introduction of 7 Tehillim: 4, 6, 54, 55, 61, 67, 76.

Although it is called the Book of Psalms by many, it is actually the Scroll of Tehillim. Tehillim is the plural of the Hebrew word תְּהִלָּה tehilla (H8416).
תְּהִלָּה Tehilla (H8416) is in the Bible 57 times and is always translated praise. תְּהִלָּה tehilla (H8416) is found in the following books:

There are 13 Tehillim that have Psalm Song in the introduction. The translators added “and” or “or” between Psalm and Song in the introduction. This was not an appropriate addition and it changes the meaning of the introduction. In all 13 Tehillim, it is the Hebrew words מִזְמוֹר mizmor (H4210) and שִׁיר shiyr (H7891).
מִזְמוֹר mizmor (H4210) is in the Bible 57 times and is always translated Psalm. It is only found in the Scroll of Tehillim and is always in the introduction.
שִׁיר shiyr (H7891) is in the Bible 87 times. שִׁיר shiyr (H7891) is translated sing 41 times, singer 37 times, singing men 4 times, singing women 4 times and behold 1 time.

Qorach was infamous for his rebellion, Bemidbar 16:1-4.
1 Now Qorach, the son of Yitzhar, the son of Qehat, the son of Levi, and Datan and Aviram, the sons of Eliav, and On, the son of Pelet, sons of Reuven, took. 2 And they rose up before Moshe, with certain of the Children of Yisrael, two hundred and fifty leaders (nasiy) of the assembly, famous (qariy) in the congregation, men of name (shem). 3 And they gathered themselves together against Moshe and against Aharon, and said to them, too much upon you, seeing all the congregation holy, every one of them, and Yehovah among them. Wherefore then lift you up yourselves above the congregation of Yehovah? 4 And when Moshe heard, he fell upon his face.
Bemidbar 16 details the entire rebellion and what happened to them. This is summarized in Bemidbar 26:9-11.
9 And the sons of Eliav; Nemuel, and Datan, and Aviram. This Datan and Aviram, famous in the congregation, who strove against Moshe and against Aharon in the company of Qorach, when they strove against Yehovah. 10 And the land opened her mouth, and swallowed them up together with Qorach, when that company died, what time the fire devoured two hundred and fifty men. And they became a sign. 11 Notwithstanding the children of Qorach died not.
Although Qorach died, some of his children did survive. Qorach was a Qehat. The significance of this is, his family already had responsibilities in the setup and removal of the Ohel of the Congregation. Even though Qorach rebelled, the duties assigned to his family remained, Bemidbar 4:15.
15 And when Aharon and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Qehat shall come to bear. But they shall not touch holy thing, lest they die. These the burden of the sons of Qehat in the Ohel of the Congregation.
More than likely, the 11 Tehillim addressed to the sons of Qorach was because of 1 Divre Hayyamim 9:19.
19 And Shallum the son of Qore, the son of Evyasaf, the son of Qorach, and his brethren, of the house of his father, the Qorchum, over the work of the service, keepers of the gates of the Ohel. And their fathers, over the host of Yehovah, keepers of the entry.
It seems that the sons of Qorach were gatekeepers. In the Millennium, this will actually be a fairly important responsibility. It will be their duty to ensure only those who are of the Kingdom will be allowed to enter. As such, one cannot merely enter because they think they are saved. They must be of the faith. It is therefore incumbent on one to seriously consider the words of Paul in 2 Corinthians 13:5.
5 Examine yourselves, whether you be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know you not your own selves, how that Yeshua Messiah is in you, except you be reprobates?
One may think that this is ludicrous, but Yeshua states in Matityahu 7:21-23.
21 Not every one that says to Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the Kingdom of Heaven; but he that does the will of My Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name? And in Your name have cast out devils? And in Your name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess to them, I never knew you. Depart from Me, you that work iniquity.
These thought they had salvation, but they were mistaken. Do not be mistaken. Examine yourself, there are consequences to not understanding what is at stake.
It makes sense why it is written in Tehilla 84:10.
10 For a day in Your courts better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my Redeemer, than to dwell in the Ohel of wickedness.
It would be a great honor to be included in this class of people or to even walk with them. These are among the most righteous of the Kingdom.

Songs of Ascents
Songs of Ascents
Tehilla 120 through Tehilla 134 are known as the Songs of Ascents. There are various beliefs surrounding these Tehillim. The introduction of A Song of Ascents may indicate musical instructions, literary structure, the physical ascent to the Temple or return from exile. Unfortunately, none of these or other thoughts as to the introduction can be verified today.
What is important about the Songs of Ascents is what they represent in relation to the walk of an individual towards Yehovah. There are 15 steps described in these Tehillim. The first being to call on Yehovah and the last is to be the very righteous one praising Yehovah in His house in Tziyyon.

1st Step. An individual comes to the following realizations: · It is not within their capacity to resolve their own problems. · The world is really not their friend. · They need Yehovah to bring them out of their distress and troubles. · One will not live a life of fulfillment without Yehovah in the lead. This is the first step towards living a righteous life. The individual calls out to Yehovah for help with a pure heart.

2nd Step. It is to have exclusive childlike faith in the Father. · One comes to the realization that Yehovah is a good God. · He watches over and protects those that are willing to continue the righteous path. · One learns that they do not have to be perfect, they just need to be more righteous with each step they take. The individual is drawing closer to the gate of Yerushalayim and leaving the world behind.

3rd Step. This is when one hears the call to come to Yerushalayim that is above. · They long to return to the city of their birthplace and be with their spiritual family. · One realizes the importance of coming out of Harlot Worship and getting Harlot Worship out of them. · They look forward to joining tightly with the body of believers. This is when one realizes that they can only pass through the gates of Yerushalayim when they are of a pure faith walking righteously towards Yehovah.

4th Step. This step is the difference between a child and one that moves forward into spiritual maturity. It requires one to: · Become actively involved in a vibrant assembly of spiritually mature believers. · Change from “do and understand” to “do, understand, meditate, spiritually mature, and move forward in faith and in the power of the Spirit”. · No longer is it just going through the motions, they must start to walk in the newness of the Spirit. · Look to the workings of God and faith in the word. · Look to the supernatural occurrences in their life and the lives of those around them. · Meditate and understand how these work together for the overall plan of God. One moves forward in faith, love and power of the Spirit all in a single step. Or at least, they continue trying until perfection comes.

5th Step. The believer is part of an assembly of committed believers walking in righteousness. · Together they are making the journey to Yerushalayim. · They acknowledge and praise Yehovah for the Assembly Hedge. · This hedge is essential for the survival of the Assembly. · It covers those that are too weak to build their own Hedge. · Those building the Hedge are on a path of continual repentance. The Assembly Hedge is essential for those that will eventually be a part of the High Calling of God.

6th Step. This is the step before entering into Yerushalayim. Once an individual is in Yerushalayim everything will change. · This step divides those in the assembly, those that pursue righteousness from those that turn to iniquity. · Those that pursue righteousness will continually assess to improve their standing in the faith. Those that will cross into Yerushalayim are on the narrow path of a life of absolute trust in Yehovah.

7th Step. This is the step that brings one at the gates of Yerushalayim and right through them. This Tehilla starts out as a remembrance that quickly turns to rejoicing as one steps through the gates to a life that is completely renewed. One is confident that Yehovah’s deliverance surrounds the remnant. As such, they are filled with His joy at all times. They have overcome both spiritual exiles.

8th Step. One sees the Temple in an uncompleted form. They start to become part of the greatest construction program of our time, the Temple of the Living God. This is when the individual can start to make a major difference in the Kingdom of God. This is when one goes forward in a new day of repentance; fulfilling Yehovah’s word in the power of the Holy Spirit. They are to birth new believers in the power of the Holy Spirit and raise up disciples.

9th Step. This is the step when one is building the Temple of Yerushalayim and starts to see the fruit of their labors. Their labors are returning to them as the Temple grows. It returns both in spirit and in soul. It becomes a satisfying endeavor for all those that put their hand to the task. This is when an individual has picked up their cross in complete humility for the glory of God.

10th Step. This step is the one that few take. To move beyond this point to the next level; will require a separation that few are willing to go through. This step is when one starts to intensify their separation from outside influences. This is the step when one is considering the Nazirite Vow. However, there will be changes that one will need to manage if they are to go forward. These will include a further sanctification from the world and a greater time commitment to the word and prayer.

11th Step. This step represents the point when one has arrived in the faith. No longer are they concerned with outside influences. Every situation becomes something to learn from and prove their worth to Yehovah. This individual’s attention is almost entirely focused on Yehovah. They wait on Yehovah for all direction. They are striving for acceptance that will only come in the next step.

12th Step. This is when one requests Yehovah’s permission and assistance to fulfill the Nazarite Vow. The Nazarite Vow like all affairs of the faith cannot be accomplished without His power working through the individual. This is when one willingly desires to commit their lives in total service to Yehovah and His people. They are willing to completely turn from their own desires and life in the world to serve Yehovah in all their capacity.

13th Step. This is the step when one is beyond the Nazarite Vow, either they are a full servant to the Levites or they are considered a spiritual Levite themselves. There is only one primary focus. It is to serve the greater good of Yehovah with all their might. They truly are building the Temple in a way few can see. They are involved in the details that secure the overall structure. Their eye is persistently focused on Yehovah’s will, purposes and their specific role in the Kingdom of God.

14th Step. This is the step when one has entered their priesthood and is going forward in the full commission of Yehovah. It is achieving the High Calling of God in Yeshua Messiah. It is to bring forth a greater unity in the Body of Believers and see the manifestation of His power in the lives of others.

15th Step. This step is leading the worship of a section of the Body of Believers as a single unit. It is when the power of God is so strong that healings are occurring without the request. When unity brings strength and covering to others. It is the sweet and overwhelming expression of Yehovah’s love through all parts of the body.

When the Tehilla has the Introduction “A Song of Ascents for Daviyd” it represents a major step in the walk of a believer. There is one Tehilla of the Songs of Ascent with a unique introduction, Tehilla 127. Its introduction is “A Song of degrees for Solomon.” This too is a major step. The five major steps of an individual’s journey to spiritual fulfillment are:

The first major step is when we make returning to Yerushalayim our greatest desire. This is when we want to return to the birthplace of our Spirit, Soul and eventually our Body. We want more than anything to be within the greater purposes of Yehovah in all we do. We start to gain momentum in our journey.

The second major step is when we are moving from a child to greater spiritual maturity. It is when the individual is looking to Yerushalayim for their provision. They transition from “do and understand” and start to implement “do, understand, meditate, spiritually mature, and to move forward in faith and in the power of the Spirit”. This individual is walking in the newness of the Spirit. They have found an assembly of believers that are similar to them. Many in the assembly are growing in Spirit and Truth. It is an assembly moving in faith, His love and His power.

The third major step is reaching the court where one is worshiping righteously, praising Yehovah in His house in Tziyyon. This is the step when they are within the boundaries of Yerushalayim and they hear a new call. It is to build the Temple of the Living God. It is when one joins with Yeshua and the Apostles to complete the Temple of the Living God.

The fourth major step is when one is given the audience to prove their worth to complete the Nazarite Vow. It is when Yehovah grants the power to complete the requirements. Their life will never be theirs again.

The fifth major step is when an individual comes into their Priesthood. They have reached the pinnacle of their journey in the faith. From here it is only upward and closing the gap to total fulfillment of their place in the Kingdom of Yehovah. This is when instilling unity into the body of believers in the love and power of Yehovah becomes a primary focus. |

A tephillah, תְּפִלָּה tefillah (H8605), is in the Bible 77 times and is always translated prayer. It is in the introduction of 5 Tehillim: Tehilla 17, Tehilla 86, Tehilla 90, Tehilla 102 and Tehilla 142. It is also in the introduction of Chavaqquq’s prayer, Chavaqquq 3:1. תְּפִלָּה tefillah (H8605) refers to a prayer set to music and sung in a worship service.

The Hebrew word יְשׁוּעָה Yeshua (H3444) is in the Bible 78 times. יְשׁוּעָה Yeshua (H3444) is translated salvation 65 times, help 4 times, deliverance 3 times, health 3 times, save 1 time, saving 1 time and welfare 1 time. Yeshua is a proper name. It is Joshua in the English. It is the name of the Messiah that came in the New Testament. Tehillim contains 45 occurrences of יְשׁוּעָה Yeshua (H3444). This is more than any other Book of the Bible. The next book that contains the most occurrences is Yeshayahu, 19 times.
