אֶרֶץ eretz (H0776) land

Bereishis 1:1

1 In the beginning Redeemer (elohiym) created the heaven and the earth.

Earth is the Hebrew word אֶרֶץ eretz (H0776).  It is in the Bible 2504 times.  אֶרֶץ eretz (H0776) is translated land 1543 times, earth 712 times, country 140 times, ground 98 times, world 4 times, way 3 times, common 1 time, field 1 time, nations 1 time and wilderness + מִדְבָּר midbar (H4057) 1 time.

אֶרֶץ eretz (H0776) is one of the most common Hebrew nouns.  It is also a greatly misunderstood Hebrew word.  This is mainly due to prejudice by non-Yisraeli and misunderstanding of Yehovah’s Overall Plan of Redemption.  When Yehovah created the land in Bereishis 1, it was all the land.  At that time, אֶרֶץ eretz (H0776) was composed of all the surface of the world.

Earth should come from the Hebrew word אֲדָמָה adamah (H0127).  It is in the Bible 225 times.  אֲדָמָה adamah (H0127) is translated land(s) 125 times, earth 53 times, ground 43 times, husbandman 2 times, country 1 time and husbandry 1 time.

World comes from the Hebrew word תֵּבֵל tevel (H8398).  It is in the Bible 36 times.  תֵּבֵל tevel (H8398) world 35 times and habitable part 1 time.

These three Hebrew words have been used interchangeably at times.  They have very different meanings and should not be confused.  In simple terms, the world is made up of the land plus the earth.

אֶרֶץ eretz (H0776) should always be translated land.

אֲדָמָה adamah (H0127) should always be translated earth.

תֵּבֵל tevel (H8398) should always be translated world.

If these words are translated this way, it differentiates the meaning.  If not, the meaning will be lost.  This will not be as great of a concern in Eternity.

אֶרֶץ eretz (H0776) or land, when properly translated, is the focus of Yehovah’s concern.  Typically, it refers to the land of Yisrael.  However, other lands can be the focus of Yehovah at times.

אֲדָמָה adamah (H0127) or earth, when properly translated, is anything outside of the focus of Yehovah’s concern.  Although it is not His focus, He is not limited by this.

Currently, land is a very small amount.  It includes both a physical and spiritual component.  The physical component is the land of Yisrael in the Middle East.  The Spiritual component is believers that are within the Spiritual Kingdom of Yehovah.  This does not include all believers, it is a very small group of believers, the remanent.

When Yeshua returns in the Restitution of All Things, the literal and spiritual components will join into one Kingdom.  From that time forward, the physical will start to grow until it completely encompasses the world, תֵּבֵל tevel (H8398).  At that time, the difference between land and earth will start to diminish.  The physical earth will be engulfed as the land experiences a restitution.  Next, spiritual Yisrael will start to grow in numbers and the race of Adam will cease to exist.  This is the most basic of explanations.

As such, אֶרֶץ eretz (H0776) should always be rendered land.  The context of the Scriptures will help to explain its meaning and Yehovah’s focus.  Bereishis 1:1 should have been translated:

1 In the beginning Redeemer (elohiym) created the heaven and the land (eretz).
