James 2:2
2 For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment
Assembly is the Greek word synagōgē (G4864). It is in the Bible 57 times. It is translated synagogue 55 times, congregation once and assembly once. The use of the word assembly is misleading. If God had meant an assembly, the writer would have used a different Greek word. This seems to be a deliberate mistranslation to hide the fact that early Christian congregations met in synagogues. Some translations have corrected this error; however, modern translations maintain the error. James 2:2 should have been translated:
2 For if there come unto your synagogue a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment
Acts 13:43
43 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.
Congregation is the Greek word synagōgē (G4864). This is not as grievous an error, since from the context it is clear that these individuals attended a synagogue. However, if one was true to the meaning; Acts 13:43 should have been translated:
43 Now when the synagogue was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.
