G2438 Strap 4C4

ἱμάς himas (G2438) latchet, strap

Mark 1:7

And preached, saying, There comes one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.

Latchet comes from the Greek word ἱμάς himas (G2438).  It is in the Bible 4 times.  ἱμάς himas (G2438) is translated latchet 3 times and thong 1 time.  ἱμάς himas (G2438) denotes “a thong, strap” whether for binding prisoners or for fastening sandals.  As such, Mark 1:7 should be translated:

And preached, saying, There comes one mightier than I after me, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.

This affects the following Scriptures, the former word is in parenthesis.

Luke 3:16

16 John answered, saying to all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I comes, the strap (latchet) of whose sandals I am not worthy to unloose.  He shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

John 1:27

27 He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose sandal’s strap (latchet) I am not worthy to unloose.

Acts 22:25

25 And as they bound him with straps (thongs), Paul said to the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
