G2885 Garnished in Order 10c10

κοσμέω kosmeo (G2885) put in order

Matthew 12:44

44 Then he said, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he finds empty, swept, and garnished (kosmeo).

Garnished comes from the Greek word κοσμέω kosmeo (G2885).  It is in the Bible 10 times.  κοσμέω kosmeo (G2885) is translated adorn 5 times, garnish 4 times and trim 1.  It means to put in proper order, i.e., decorate literally or figuratively.  κοσμέω kosmeo (G2885), primarily “to arrange, to put in order”.  κοσμέω kosmeo (G2885) is used to put in order as to:

  • Furnishing a room, building.
  • Trimming lamps.
  • To adorn, to ornament as of garnishing tombs.

In the case of κοσμέω kosmeo (G2885) the translators determine the meaning for the reading in a figurative way.  This unfortunately may have not always been correct.  As such, for the 10 uses of this κοσμέω kosmeo (G2885), it should always be translated put in order.  As such, Matthew 12:44 should be translated:

44 Then he said, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he finds empty, swept, and put in order (kosmeo).
